    VPN Recommendations

I am looking to get a VPN (I know, late to the party) and need some recommendations. I have been cold turkeying it ever since my ISP started cracking down on "certain" activities.

I heard that different VPN's are better for different things. But that could just be marketing and all VPN's could be exactly the same.

I don't need a VPN for internet gaming, if that helps narrow the list down.

    Thanks

What you're looking for is PIA since it has a few servers that tell you the port it's using so you can forward it for torrents.

any vpn will do the job, as long as it forwards any traffic
    i've heard https://nordvpn.com is good

if you're capable enough, you can build your own vpn server running a virtual private server. that'll cost you less money in the long run
im running my own vpn server on a vps droplet at digitalocean.com
    (walkthrough https://www.digitalocean.com/communi...n-ubuntu-18-04)

Thanks for the recommendations! I am not as tech savvy as I should be. So anything that is user friendly while getting the job done is my best option.

After trying out a few I went with SurfShark. I've been pleased so far, and here and there they offer lifetime subscriptions. They were pretty well rated by CNET if that's worth anything to you. I have it up all the time and never really notice it's there, even while gaming. I do have a very fast connection though.

It's easy to pick different locations such as in the US or Europe, and it was a piece of cake to configure at the router level.

Only "issue" I have with it is here and there I have to disconnect it and reconnect it - pages will bog down or not load. That quick DC/RC fixes it everytime.

I use Nordvpn too, very easy interface and they allow up to 6 devices on one account.

No clue how safe torrenting is with that, I don't do that. But Nordvpn has a P2P server option and an option "onion over vpn". Also a kill switch which automatically kills your internet when you lose connection to the vpn.

I think today everyone should have a vpn even if you don't do illegal things. Simply for protecting yourself when using your smartphone in other peoples wlans. I don't use it at home much.

Can do without a VPN personally, all you're doing is moving trust from your ISP to somewhere else that's paying a shitload in advertising to gain your custom and you're adding extra hops and layers to your traceroute. They say they don't keep logs but that can't be proved in any way shape or form and they can still be raided with a warrant just like an ISP can.

The times I've had something blocked in my country I can count on one hand. My ISP doesn't give 2 hoots about torrents and if you wanted go to p*****bay which is blocked by my ISP on request from the govt. you can just use a Tor enabled browser.

I use NordVPN and I’m satisfied with the speeds I get OP. I’m not too tech savvy either but NordVPN is very easy to use.

PIA or Mullvad are pretty good and don't log anything
NordVPN is super mainstream atm, which is both a positive in that they make a ton of money to invest in their product, but also a downside in that they also invest a lot of money into advertising. And them being popular means they're also more likely to be the target of malicious attacks.

I mean, they've already been compromised and breached a couple times.

If law enforcement really wants to get us they will no matter what we do.

The reason for using VPN is to protect yourself from some numbnut criminal who has invaded public wifi of the coffee shop or pub or macdonalds or whereever you might use public internet. If you are at home using your own internet don't bother with vpn.

You want a VPN with a decent number of servers and doesn't keep logs. The 'no logs' are really about seeing how reputable a company is versus actual need.

I've used PIA, Express, and AdGuard. AdGuard only because it was part of other AdGuard software. It worked okay nothing special but works nicely with their platform. PIA and Express are more desktop oriented and more what you need. PIA is cheaper PIA is also owned by a company with a tarnished past now. Could mean nothing. I had decent success with them but also ran into a number of blacklisted IPs.

Express is the more expensive option. The most robust server farm though. I rarely if ever have reliability problems with them. They also offer DNS services and a number of VPN protocols. Again they are the most expensive but there's a reason - there are VPNs that cheaper but in par with them, though.

NordVPN is fast and has a ton of servers available, easy to use to boot. The issue however is, that quite many servers are blocking it, and those that haven't will barrage you with captchas left and right until you are shitting those blurry images of fire hydrants. Not sure if PIA has reached that level as well, but at least 1+ year ago it hadn't, although was quite slow from time to time.

I went through this a few years ago. It worked, but ultimately, the bandwidth loss of around 60% wasn't worth it.

Wireguard would be a better option. NordVPN has this under the name 'NordLynx', but you can setup your own with a guide like this: https://www.digitalocean.com/communi...n-ubuntu-16-04

You could try a tor browser:
    https://www.torproject.org/

While its not a vpn, it should prevent your provider seeing what you see, but they still know you use it. You can then mix it up with any vpn.

Because it's the current mainstream one. Everyone who's watched almost any kind of Youtube video in the past year or 2 has heard of them, because they sponsor anyone who'll take their money.

I personally use Windscribe, I have used it for about a year or 2 possibly, they have awesome features and most importantly NO LOGS. They also offer it for free with limited GB obviously but there is a way to increase it to 50 GB per month by using the voucher (if it still works) voucher 50GBFREE. This is also one of the very few VPNs who doesn't seem to throttle my Internet speeds down to nothing since I have 500MBs speed.

What would you recommend as an alternative? As I posted earlier, I don’t know much about these things, I googled and most sites recommended ExpressVPN or NordVPN.

Gonna give Windscribe a go I think.
