Question How to/can you Set up/switch to home Wifi from Landline Internet

Hello All, first off i should mention i have never set up a home wifi connection/network and i just always used the landline aka phone-jack line with the modem the internet company provided around 9 years ago. Current PC is around 4 to 5 Years Old only replaced one fan once.
I live in a small rural farm town (only town in any direction for at least 15 mintues). So my question: Should i buy a brand new wifi router to enable my PC & Cell Phone (LG VELVET android) to have wifi wireless internet access?

    Need a bit more info.

    1) What internet connection do you have -now-? Is it cable? DSL? Dial-up (you mentioned phone jack)? Satellite?
    2) I'm assuming the current modem, whatever it is, doesn't have wifi. Is it a router? Are other computers connected to the internet, or is it just one?

A wired connection has generally a better quality than wlan. That said for your phone wlan makes sense (since phones can't be easily wired). So your decision is if you want to have home internet on your phone. If so, buy a wlan router. In any case, keep your computer connected to the modem via cable.

Also not every computer is wifi capable.

If your current modem/router works fine (and without knowing what kind of internet connection you have it's difficult to give advice on any new modem/router) you could simply buy a wireless access point and plug that into your existing modem/router.

The principle of a wireless conection requires a device that broadcasts the signal, nomally a reuter. It also requires a receiver device, you can get a cheap one for less then 15€.

For example, any modern cell phone is hable to broadcast a signal and work has a reuter, but you still the receiver conected to your computer.

To conect one to the other you go to wireless settings in your computer, you select a SSID (the name of the signal being boradcast by the reuter), you introduce the password, and that's it, conection established.

I advise you to get the proper reuter for your current conection, but since you actually mention a modem you normally can conect a modem to the reuter via RJ45.

They will help you choose the right model.
That's all wireless is good for is convenience. If you or the OP want reliability, speeds that are unaffected by your neighbors, or the materials your dwelling is made up of then wired is the obvious choice.
