So they based the "remaster" off the cellphone games.

Isn't that what the principal company behind this rerelease was known for, cell phone games?

Users have found cellphone game controls in the game. So they based the "remaster" off the cellphone games.

What kind of shit show went down behind closed doors honestly.

I think that was just the easiest.
They made a mobile version of the game in 2012 or so and they sort of modernized the code for the mobile release.
Some time later they released a console HD edition and for that they took the mobile game as a basis, probably because it had the newest codebase. And now for the remastered Version they probably used the HD edition which was based on the mobile game, again probably because it was the newest code.

The thing is, they removed a lot of small stuff in the mobile version, probably to make it easier to use on a phone. And that stuff is missing the the console and pc version, too.
