Without dark souls there wouldnt be bloodborne or any other souls-like game.

So DS literally defined a genre and created a new type of game genre we havent had before.

You hesitate to put a game in the same category that did exactly what you claimed those other games did? awkward.

Soulsborne is not a genre. No matter how much souls fan boys want it to be. Sub genre at best, and even that is pushing it. OoT created all the basics of Souls gameplay, down to the lock on combat system. Nobody was calling OoT a soulsborne game. This is why zoomers shouldn't act like they know gaming history.

Great devs who made great sequels too. But not even close ultimate game of all time. I wouldn't even know what game to give that title to. Maybe Tetris? Really don't know.

Nah. I was never blown away by the series. It's kinda dull and all the same stuff to me. Dodge, take a swing, dodge, take a swing. I found it tiring.

Yes, I completed all three games and kings field. Not that matters but I am sure some Johnny Elite will claim I never played all the games if I think it's a bore.

The acclaim the series gets is largely generational in my opinion. These are hardly the most difficult games I played and beaten, again this also doesn't matter, but the games came out at a time of transition for the industry audience. Similar to Final Fantasy 7, not the best FF IMO. Though FF7 came out at just the right time to leave an impression.

I mean stuff like "of all time" and "ultimate" is never to be taken seriously. I personally think DS is massively overrated and propped up by the hardcore meme. CoD:Blops has sold more of that single title than the DS franchise as a whole. I personally feel that the game has good niche, but making it the ultimate game of all time is way too subjective, as the overwhelming majority of people that play games will never actually play it for various reasons.

From that list, imo Last of Us, Halo, GTA, Portal, BotW and CoD should not even be there, because they are just good games, but nothing that changed or influenced genres/gaming as a whole for generations and Dark Souls "just" showed devs (again) that there's still room for difficult games.

While I don't play them, I feel like pointing out that CoD did indeed define the military shooter (sub-)genre as a whole for years now as the biggest title in the genre. As much as they are a meme as well, you can't really argue with the sheer market force of these titles.

I mean taking such rewards seriously is extremely hard for me, as different people look for different things in gaming. I personally am almost exclusively interested in RPGs and maybe action adventures with strong narrative (whatever you count stuff like deus ex, dishonored, etc as) as an extension of frantasy and narrative driven content, I couldn't care less to compete online against others or grind my teeth on difficult things for the bragging rights. Others do though, but looking how most of the gaming market is in actuallity mobile games by sheer number and profit these days, you can argue most people care neither about my RPG niche, nor modern military shooters, nor hardcore souls(osborne)like. Heck even sports games don't amount to much in the grand scheme of things to make such a claim as the award does.

Edit: I think realistically you could only give such a title in all honesty to something like an mmo you do in a scuffed post-game game dev tycoon run, where the game is played by more people than there are people on earth - and your failure to keep up with expansions crashes your company and probably the world on a global scale

Dark Souls is good but overrated. Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3 and even Demon's Souls (not the remake) are better games.

Have you played Demons Souls? The bosses are a joke, hitboxes are as broken as in DS2, the inventory system is atrocious and the world tendency system is confusing and useless.

You can say the DS series is the ultimate game of all time since it made so many things right and brought so many good things back to mainstream games. I havent played bloodborne (cant wait until I can emulate that with 60fps) but I would say DS3 is the best soulsborne game yet. DS1s first half is like a 10/10 but the second half is more like 6/10 and DS3 is a solid 9/10.

How can it even be a contender for "ultimate game of all time" lmao. Proof if proof were needed that these "awards" are trash. Maybe it's the best game of its genre, but not much else.
