Expansion Concept: Mysteries of the South Seas

I previously did a thread about my ideas for a 'Dragon Stuff' related expansion, but I've had another concept rattling around in my noggin for a about a week that I'm sharing now. Battle of Azeroth used up a lot of the 'Great Seas' content like Kul Tiras etc., but there's still a lot of stuff on Azeroth's oceans that has the potential to explore. Here's my thoughts, trying to keep things concise and aided by a bit of concept art from here and there. Enjoy.

New Feature: Warships - Captain your own customizable ship, build a stalwart crew, and sail to adventure
New Dungeons and Raids: 8 new dungeons, a new megadungeon on Plunder Isle, raids on Un'goro and Kezan, and a new Kezan infinite dungeon

    Overview

The Island of Kezan: for years, it has been a desolate, disaster-wracked wasteland, polluted and unlivable, unfit for any sensible or civilized race, a festering sore on face of Azeroth, a deathtrap hellscape populated only by the desperate, the foolish, or the insane.

And that was just when the goblins were running the place. Then a giant dragon blew it up and things got even worse.

    This is fine.

Recently, the goblins have begun to rebuild their capital of Undermine, and word has gotten around: Undermine is on the rise, and poised to take Azeroth by storm as a new major hub of trade, adventure, and of course patented goblin technological exploitation. Adventurers and representatives from across the world are rushing to get a piece of the action, and the Alliance and Horde are prepared to ensure their pieces are big ones.

But not all is well in Undermine, even by the standards of a goblin megaopolis. Strange things have been stirred up in the depths of Kezan - the Cataclysm, the Wounding, and Azeroth's Awakening have unearthed a long buried secret. Mysterious powers are stirring in surrounding lands. And a terrible new threat is about to make itself known to all the races of Azeroth.

The mysteries of the South Seas are about to be revealed, and will shake the very foundations of the world...

A new threat emerges: The Legion Ex Machina

    Introduction - A New Threat

The Mysteries storyline beings with the Alliance and Horde sending delegations to Kezan to meet with the Goblin Trade Union, and the greatest champions of Azeroth (the players) are commanded to attend to demonstrate the martial might of the factions holds strong.

Arriving on Kezan, a portion of the vast ruined megaopolis of Undermine acts as the introductory area. Rampaging machines, deranged mutants, hostile elementals, and all manner of threats are still at large, and the heroes of the Alliance and Horde have plenty to do.

The true threat rears its head as the delegations reach the heart of the newly burgeoning Undermine construction: an army of mysterious mechanical beings calling themselves the Legion Ex Machina attacks from the depths of Undermine, only recently excavated by the goblins.

The LXM boasts terrifying technology and displays the ability to subvert and take control of goblin machinery, turning their greatest inventions against them. Unable to hold out long against the LXM, the heroes are forced to retreat along with Trade Union forces.

    Gadgetzan

X.0 Campaign Storyline - The Undertaking

Driven from their newly reclaimed homeland, the Trade Union regroups at nearby Gadgetzan. There they propose a radical new campaign of reclamation: The Undertaking. They will defeat the Legion Ex Machina and reclaim their homeland. The Alliance and Horde, troubled by the appearance of this powerful new threat that seems to be able to control all technology, pledge their support to the Undertaking, and the heroes are given the opportunity to travel throughout the South Seas and take part in various operations organized by the Trade Union. The heroes take command of their own warships as mobile bases, and sail them to various ports of call across the region.

    -New Capital: Gadgetzan-
Gadgetzan expanded considerably in the wake of the Cataclysm, and is now a sprawling port city, and the de facto goblin capital as long as the Undermine lies in the hands of the LXM. Gadgetzan acts as the headquarters of the Undertaking, with the Trade Union sending out strikeforces across the South Seas from the port. Local criminal gangs are also heavily active, making street life fraught with peril, and opportunity.

In addition to acting as the primary hub for the expansion, Gadgetzan contains a large amount of quest-related content in its vast and twisting city streets, in the vein of Suramar. It also holds entrances to 2 dungeons, and the surrounding Tanaris zone has been reworked to include additional quest content.

    -Gadgetzan Dungeons-
Mean Streets of Gadgetzan - The local crimelords are causing trouble for the Trade Union, threatening the momentum of the Undertaking. Agents from the Grimy Goons, Jade Lotus, and the Kabal will need to be faced, with a showdown against the Kabal leader Kazakus, a mysterious troll(?) sorcerer with plans for the powers awakening across the South Seas.

Voyage to Ogrezonia - The fabled island of Ogrezonia has been discovered, but Undertaking forces venturing there have not reported in. Face down Ogre Amazons, savage Wild Gods, and the unknown entity commanding the Ogrezonians, which may be connected with the LXM!

    Mean Streets

    -Tel'Abim-
The mist-shrouded jungle island of Tel'Abim is renowned for its fruit exports, but little else is known about it. Tribes of hozen and tigon populate its rain-forests, and renegade goblin forces have been enslaving the locals to work in plantations and dig-sites. Mysterious advanced machines unlike anything seen before on Azeroth are being unearthed in the digging. Also buried beneath the surface are ancient troll ruins dating to the age when the Zandalari ruled Kezan, and LXM forces have tunneled into the area from deeper below ground. The LXM seeks to capture the mysterious machinery found in the region, which resists their ability to control technology. These mysterious machines may be the key to victory against them.

    -Tel'Abim Dungeons-
Guttlekraw Slaveworks - The renegade goblin Trade Prince Guttlekraw has enslaved the inhabitants of Tel'Abim to carry out his excavations. Even worse, he hasn't been paying his Trade Union dues for the Undertaking. The unscrupulous Trade Prince's slaves have recently unearthed an ancient machine of unknown providence, and Guttlekraw's reckless use of this mysterious technology threaten all of Tel'Abim.

    -Plunder Isle-
The stronghold of the Bloodsail Buccaneers pirate crew. Before the Bloodsail conquered the island as their pirate fortress, it was known as the Tsle of Hiji, used by the Zandalari trolls as a necropolis for some of their most revered priests. LXM forces are attacking the island from deep underground tunnels that have exposed the hidden necropolis, and the Bloodsail are raiding the ancient tombs for treasure and magical artifacts. Pirates, robots, and undead have descended into all out war, and whoever wins will be trouble for the rest of the South Seas.

    -Plunder Isle Dungeons-
Temple of Hiji - The Bloodsail pirates made the island of Hiji their stronghold without ever knowing the ancient secrets hidden in its long-buried temples. Treasures of the ancient Zandalari Empire have been unearthed, and their powers have lured the unwitting Bloodsail to unleash them. In the heart of the tomb, mighty stone mogu warriors gifted to the trolls by the Thunder King in ancient times stand ready to unleash a wrath that has been building for millennia.

Bloodsail Hold - The Bloodsail pirates have long been a thorn in the side of honest traders, and the time has finally come to put an end to this threat once and for all. But Duke Falrevere, admiral of the Bloodsail Buccaneers, is not a foe that will go down easy, and his deadly new weapons obtained from the LXM will be turned on any who dare try.

    Un'goro has evolved...
    -Un'goro Crater-
The destruction of Silithus caused pure azerite to pour into nearby Un'goro Crater. Long known as an ancient laboratory for the experiments of the Titans, the region's life has been galvanized by the azerite, and fantastic new lifeforms have emerged. The dinosaurs of Un'goro possess new powers of rapid evolution, transforming in battle into new mutant forms with new abilities. The Silithid, once mindless creatures serving the masters of Ahn'Qiraj, are evolving as well into even more hostile and intelligent forms. Caverns beneath the crater have been exposed, revealing more of the Titans ancient works, buried portions of Ahn'Qiraj, and mysterious technology of unknown origins being sought by the LXM.

    -Un'goro Crater Dungeons-
Caverns of Evolution - The cave system below Un'goro thrums with life, the evolutionary crystal formations there having been enhanced by exposure to azerite. Even more amazing and dangerous transforming monsters can be found here. But the newly evolved silithid are also present, and have seemingly struck an alliance with the LXM, both unlikely factions working together to exploit the caverns' power!

    -Viruganis Seamount-
A series of volcanic islands that arose during the Cataclysm, the Seamount has proven to be a highly dangerous region with many ships having gone missing. The unstable lands are infested with monstrous sea creatures, while volcanic caldera pour molten lava into the sea, driving the elemental spirits of the land into a rampage. The wrecks of countless ships line the coast, and their dead crews have begun to rise from their watery graves. Worst of all, the naga have established extensive fortifications on the island, which has been further bolstered by forces fleeing Nazjatar. They are building an army that will threaten all the South Seas if they are not opposed.

    -Viruganis Seamount Dungeons-
Gravesail - A colossal mountain made of wrecked ships, the remains of vessels destroyed in the region by the naga and their monstrous sea beasts. The Trade Union needs an important artifact recovered from the wreckage, but it won't be easy: not only is it the lair of vicious monsters, but the ghosts of countless slain sailors are restless, and the undead are attacking anyone who ventures in to explore. A brutal undead vrykul reaver, Pluton, commands the undead horde, and his ambitions are to turn the Gravesail into a fleet of undead pirate ships to plunder the South Seas!

The Serpentforge - The naga fortress has harnessed the power of the volcanic seamount to produce weapons infused with elemental flame. The foundries of the Serpentforge could outfit an army, and are a key resource for the naga who hope to reignite war across the oceans. The naga warlord commanding the fortress is a fanatical devotee to Azshara, and proclaims that his queen will return to lead the naga to conquest soon!

    Return to Undermine

    -Isle of Kezan: Endgame Zone-
As the Undertaking enters its final phase, the Trade Union forces gather for a counter-attack to re-take Kezan. Bolstered with new assets from across the South Seas, the Trade Union is able to push back the Legion Ex Machina forces with the aid of Azeroth's heroes. The leader of the LXM, the machine-colossus Galvanus, reveals himself and vows that the LXM will exterminate all organic life on Azeroth, beginning with Undermine.

Using the mysterious machines that the heroes have uncovered from across the South Seas, the Trade Union is able to negate the LXM's technology-hijacking powers, and the robotic armies are driven from portions of Undermine, allowing the Trade Union to establish a foothold. The war to retake Kezan is far from over, but the goblins and their allies have won the first battle!

    -Kezan Dungeons-
The Great Undertaking - New Infinite Dungeon - The Trade Union and their allies have established a foothold on Kezan, but the war to retake Undermine is far from over. Heroes must venture into the seemingly endless twisted ruins and tunnels found beneath Undermine to root out the diabolical threats infesting it.

Goblin cities, mining tunnels, buried factories, and hidden vaults are all waiting to be explored and plundered, and deeper lie even more secrets and dangers: lost troll ruins, hollow elemental caverns tainted by remnants of Deathwing's power, strongholds of the LXM, remnants of the Black Empire, and much, much more...

The evil of Ahn'Qiraj is reborn
    X.0 Raids

The Primal Core - Un'goro Crater Raid
Deep beneath the surface of Un'goro Crater lies the true heart of the Titan-made power of the region - a vast Titan facility forged by Eonar the Lifebinder, brimming with power and potential. The facility has been breached by twin threats, the LXM and the Qiraji, who like their silithid thralls have been evolved and empowered by exposure to azerite. These unlikely allies seek the secrets of life that Eonar has concealed within.

Boss Encounters: Evolved dinosaurs, LXM constructs, Silithid mutants, primal qiraji, evolved Anubisath, corrupted Titan defenses, Old God servants
    Final Boss: Qiraji Primal Emperor

Mount Kajaro - Stronghold of the LXM

Patch X.1 Storyline - Vaults of the Ancients

The Trade Union managed to establish a foothold on Kezan, and have struck a deal to realize the dream of countless souls who yearn to see huge cannons get fired - the Great Cannon of Bilgewater Harbor has been loaned (on credit) to Trade Union forces and has been transported to Undermine. The cannon is aimed at the fortified stronghold of the Legion Ex Machina, and powered with the mysterious technology recovered from across the South Seas, the goblins fire the weapon at long last.

The cannon shatters the LXM's stronghold, exposing Mount Kajaro, and revealing that the volcanic caldera has been completely overtaken by the LXM and built into a sinister mecha-metropolis. The Trade Union and their allies rally for an all out assault to defeat Galvanus and the LXM for good.

    -New Zone: Mount Kajaro-
The great volcano of Kezan, Mount Kajaro, last erupted during the Cataclysm and has lain dormant since, but is still active. The LXM has built their mecha-metropolis across the mountain and even within the caldera of the volcano itself. The region throngs with LXM forces, as well as hostile elementals, mutants from the depths, the Old God allies of the LXM in the form of the aqir, and a horrific new threat that has sprung from the twisted genius of Galvanus - the Convergence, mortal races that have been partially mechanized by LXM technology and turned into cyborg slaves!

Found in the depths of the region are also signs of the strange unknown technology that resists the efforts of the LXM to subvert. The heroes will at last unlock the secrets of these machines and their creators - the first goblins who obtained enhanced intellect from consuming the mysterious mineral kajamite. These first goblins created fantastic wonders beyond anything modern goblins are capable of, but soon started to lose their intelligence as pure kajamite sources were exhausted. In their diminishment, the goblins sealed away their most powerful creations, knowing that the creatures they would inevitably degenerate into (i.e. modern goblins) weren't responsible enough to use them properly.

Now, the LXM has uncovered hidden caches of ancient goblin technology all across the South Seas and linked them to their fortress on Kajaro for some unknown purpose. What's more, there are signs that the LXM is attempting to awaken the volcano and trigger a final eruption that will obliterate Kezan forever!

    The Eternal Forge

    -New Raid: Kajaro Undervault-
In the depths of Mount Kajaro, a great vault of the ancient goblins has been uncovered, and revealed as the true heart of the Legion Ex Machina. Within is the last great achievement of the goblin ancients, a colossal living machine known as the Eternal Forge, the creator of Galvanus and all the other LXM constructs. Built of refined kajamite metal, the Forge is a sentient being of horrific intelligence, and has masterminded the efforts of the LXM to control all the caches of ancient goblin technology hidden across the South Seas.

The Forge also reveals the true nature of kajamite - it is nothing less than the metalized blood of the Old God N'Zoth, the Great Corruptor. The ancient goblins discovered this truth and attempted to seal the Forge away, but the Cataclysm shattered the bindings on the great engine and allowed it to awaken and create the LXM. N'Zoth's demise only served to empower the Forge further, as the great machine absorbed the undying essence of the Old God. Now the Forge seethes with N'Zoth's undying will, and seeks to take its place as a true Old God in its own right and spread its machine-corruption across all of Azeroth.

Boss Encounters: LXM constructs, Convergence champions, Kajaro volcanic mutants, metal faceless ones, Old God servants, Galvanus
    Final Boss: The Eternal Forge

    -New Megadungeon: Zulthara Necrohalls-
In the resolution of the Plunder Isle storyline, the Bloodsail pirate's leader Duke Falrevere detonated a lethal LXM weapon that utterly collapsed Bloodsail Hold. The destruction of the fortress has uncovered buried troll ruins hidden for millennia in the depths of Hiji Island. Within is the necropolis of the Zandalari troll Zulthara, the high priest of the ancient empire who forged the legendary alliance between Zandalar and the Mogu civilization.

When Zulthara perished, he was enshrined in the sprawling necropolis with many of the treasures that were lavished upon him by both Zandalari royalty and the Thunder King Lei Shen of the mogu. Duke Falrevere, having survived the destruction of Bloodsail Hold, has awakened these ancient magical treasures, and in doing so stirred the wrathful spirit of High Priest Zulthara to waking as well! The vengeful troll lich threatens to unleash the buried wrath of the ancient troll and mogu empire upon the South Seas!

Boss Encounters: Bloodsail pirates, troll undead, mogu artifact-constructs, tomb defenses
    Final Boss: High Priest Zulthara

    Uldorus, the Lunar Sanctum

    Patch X.2 Storyline - The Watcher's Sanctum

The Eternal Forge was defeated in the Kajaro Undervault, but not before it activated the mysterious ancient goblin technology across the South Seas, powering one final ancient machine located in the volcano of Mount Kajaro. As the machine projected a column of light up into the sky, the undying essence of N'Zoth oozed from the destroyed Eternal Forge and slithered into the light, vanishing without a trace. Across Kezan, the Legion Ex Machina forces have fallen into dormancy, ending the immediate threat. But a great column of light now projects up from Mount Kajaro, connecting with the Blue Child Moon that now hangs in perfect alignment in the sky overhead.

The Trade Union discovers that the machine is a transport waygate connecting to some unknown location on the moon itself!

    -New Zone: Lunar Expanse-

Traveling through the waygate, the heroes of Azeroth find themselves on the Blue Child and standing before a colossal Titan facility: Uldorus, built upon its surface and extending deep into its core! The facility swarms with Legion Ex Machina forces that have become hideously mutated by N'Zoth's power, and they are attempting to subvert the facility's systems and capture the fantastic Titan technology within!

Aside from the corrupted LXM forces, hostile Titan defenses, and strange lunar creatures, the heroes of Azeroth will also have to contend with a demonic incursion by the hordes of the Twisting Nether, led by the wicked Shivarra! These demon invaders are seemingly not affiliated with the remnants of the Burning Legion, and are seeking some Titan artifact within the lunar facility for unknown goals.

    -New Raid: Uldorus, Lunar Sanctum-

At the heart of Uldorus is the Lunar Sanctum. From this place, Algalon the Observer watched over Azeroth for the Titan Pantheon for long eons, and this was where he retreated after his defeat at Ulduar long ago. In the sanctum lies a great Cosmic Waygate, the means by which Algalon's people, the Constellar, travel the cosmos. The LXM forces have already captured this waygate, and pour the dark essence of N'Zoth into it. The heroes are confronted by Algalon, who warns them that the essence of N'Zoth is attempting to return to its true place of origin - the stygian depths of the Void!

As the great corrupted Voidgate yawns wide, the dark influnece of the Void Lords reaches into the material universe, threatening to spill out and drown the world in madness! One final desperate effort by the heroes of Azeroth will be needed to close the portal and spare the world the darkness of the Void Lords!

Boss Encounters: Corrupted LXM forces, summoned alien monsters, Constellar recordings of the Old Gods, cosmic faceless ones, demonic invaders, Algalon the Possessed, Void manifestations
Final Boss: Wrath of the Void Lords

    The Void's hunger is eternal

    -Epilogue-

The presence of the Void Lords manifests as a hideous eldritch abomination, but the heroes of Azeroth are able to hold the horror at bay until the restored Algalon is able to retake control of the gateway. The undying essence of N'Zoth is drawn through the collapsing gate and banished back into the depths of the Void, and the incursion of the Void is halted.

However, Algalon informs the heroes that during their battles in the Lunar Sanctum, the invaders under the command of the Shivarra were able to briefly connect the facility's waygates to the Seat of the Pantheon, and revealed that the structure is totally abandoned, with the Titans, Sargeras, and Illidan Stormrage missing, their fates unknown! What's more, the Shivarra were able to capture a Titan artifact and flee to a world previously unvisited by the heroes of Azeroth - Tarratus, the prison world where the monstrously powerful Demon Monarchs were exiled after their rule over the cosmic realm of Disorder was usurped by Sargeras.

Dire events are unfolding in the Twisting Nether, and the future of Azeroth may be in jeopardy again very soon...

This was a really fun read. Long, but fun, and I'm glad I read it! It's obvious that a lot of thought went into brainstorming and writing all of this out. Bravo.

I was a bit on the fence about the LXM as an antagonistic force at first as it felt kind of out of left field, but I think the revelations within Mount Kajaro bring it all together in a satisfying way and manage to make it really interesting. I also like the idea of ancient goblins (we don't really have much goblin lore at all now that I think about it...). The idea of some of the Old God minions like the Qiraji and Silithid becoming more intelligent thanks to Azerite is an interesting one, too. I like that.

An expansion like this would be one hell of a ride for sure. I think Blizzard may need to split it into 3 expansions if they ever tried to tackle something of this scale.

Also, this one got me good:

And that was just when the goblins were running the place. Then a giant dragon blew it up and things got even worse.

I like it, pretty cool. I may not call it South Seas buuuuut whats offered is pretty cool and especially the whole introduction of the Void Lords. That has to be shown to us in some way. I also like the idea of the Twisting Nether being much bigger then just well Outland and such(The little sneak peak at the end was cool and who knows where Illidan and the Titans are at).

    Amazing effort.

It's a nice concept because it shows the potential depth and overlap of these zones and stories and has the ability to progress the over arching story at the same time.

This is a really great concept, honestly the only thing I can think of that is missing is Thrall punting/launching Gallywix into a furnace

And it's nice to see that while ancient goblins are a lot more stable than modern goblins, they still name things in a way that you just know a Goblin made it

Sounds really fun, I'm really glad that it'd give trolls more time to shine!
I don't play WoW anymore smh.

Sounds fun. Would love for them to do something akin to this to explore those last few (known) places on Azeroth we haven't hit up yet

Thanks for taking the time to read!

Oh, I don't know. It all comes out to about half a dozen zones, couple of patches, 3 raids, 8 dungeons... Not dissimilar to the amount of content we got in BFA and SL. I was trying specifically to keep it to that amount.

Maybe the high amount of city environments, I feel those are probably harder to do than rolling hills and forests. But if I could have only one thing actually be made canon, it'd be a revamped Gadgetzan based on Hearthstone. Love that concept.

Yeah! It's a mystery! I'm convinced we'll be exploring new demon lore someday.

Also for anyone who might not be aware, that planet Tarratus I mentioned at the end of the post isn't something I made up - it really is a world in lore that Sargeras used as a prison for demons who rebelled against the Legion. I figure if there's another 'Pantheon' for the Twisting Nether, they're probably locked up there, and are bound to break out eventually.

You and me both. I had fun upgrading and naming my fleet in WoD, a fully dedicated ship that acts as your mobile base that you could decorate with trophies and furniture would be great.

Same! I know Hearthstone is obviously not canon, but Blizzard has borrowed ideas from there in the past with things like the Tortollan... so maybe there's hope. If they ever do a full world revamp, I'm fully expecting to see Gadgetzan expanded in this fashion. If they didn't do that, it would be a huge missed opportunity imo.
