Yeah, as a metal singer and drummer myself I agree.
Music theory doesn't really mean much when it comes to extreme music. It's actually usually considered rather basic or straight up wrong when it comes to standard music theory. I learned some theory when I wanted to study music and even though it explained some stuff, it didn't mean much in long run.
To me metal was never really complex when it comes to melody and harmony. However it definitely is complex when it comes to rhythm and execution.
Ive been listening to Metal for about 25 years, and there is not a SINGLE good band from the US. They...cant, do Metal. Literally, cant. Its like 80% finnish, rest swe, nor, den and germany.
There is a really easy answer to this. America is more diverse, with more options, and likely far more musical styles to be exposed to on a daily basis. There will always be people stuck in the Top40, Japan, Brazil, whatever EU countries may apply are no different.
I think it's important to recognize that a niche visible market isn't representative of a massive popularity.
Why do you even care? It doesn't really mean much.
I get it, the music I listen to is intense and not really accessible. I can't really imagine blasting out The Dillinger Escape Plan or Every Time I Die when people just want to have a drink and chill. It's completely understandable.
Extreme music is special to me because it made sense out of all the emotions I was feeling inside while growing up. You can't really listen to such music while it plays on the background and that's why I love it. It commands attention and it's a cathartic experience.
I think it requires you to know these songs in order to enjoy them on casual level, otherwise they are simply way too busy.
You mean a country with a wildly diverse population from the entire world filled with countless cultures, vs 2 racially homogenous countries and the EU which is made up of pretty much all racially homogenous countries and limited cultures? Do I really need to find data for what is clearly a common sense statement? Brazilians live here, Japanese live here, and all sorts of EU country members live here... in decently great numbers.
So yeah, common sense statement, in a country with a diverse population, the people in that country will be exposed to an eclectic musical selection. Metal just has more competition here. And honestly Metal had its time in the 80s.
You are also taking the statement that Metal is more popular or has a wider fanbase in other countries, completely on face value. Have you asked for the statistics to back that up? I've been to a number of metal, rock, etc... shows I've seen nothing indicating there wasn't a healthy mix of people there.
