The only surprising thing about events like this is that they don't happen more often...given that hatred and scapegoating of these minority groups is mainstream policy for half of the political spectrum in the country.

I'm tired of seeing politicians on both sides making statements about how "shocking" it is when one of these mass shootings happens. Just today I was watching the talking heads on the television and they had to be very clear about making the transition between the coverage of this nightclub mass shooting and the walmart mass shooting in order not to potentially confuse the viewers.

Mass shootings in the USA are commonplace occurences. No more shocking than your garbage being picked up a little later than usual.

Yup US society has chosen, gun sales are more important than lives regardless of how many or how young.

It's now cool to 'hate minority groups' because they have been given validation that they can get away with it from powerful influential figures, and social media is partly to blame too. I am just so tired seeing it and it breaks my heart seeing actions like this happen and I do feel its going to happen far more often.

The person is nonbinary so I kinda doubt they are Boebert fans

That being said, at this point Im kinda indefferent? Republicans would rather all of us die than to pass gun control legislation

Oh, don't worry. The acceleration of violent rhetoric and empowerment of such people will ensure it becomes more commonplace, unless the GOP gets ahold of its lunatic fringe and makes it clear that they don't represent reality.

But that doesn't seem likely, does it? Even as Trumpism is failing in the GOP, it's not like McConnell and the other leadership have come out and explicitly called them out for being violent lunatics.

Gun control wouldn't fix this. Clone Canada's gun control, or Australia's, or whatever other peer country's you'd like that still has a healthy gun culture. These events would still happen. You don't need a black plastic rifle to murder a bunch of defenseless, unaware people. And given the way these nutjobs are, if guns weren't an option, they'd probably go for arson next. Turns out that even in the 2000's, burning people to death inside of buildings is still depressingly effective.

Crimes like this will continue to happen until you target the root causes of the problem - that is, violent and hateful rhetoric being circulated through social media and political figures.

Every Republican who speaks against LGBT+ rights and freedoms carries responsibility for this attack and every similar one. Don't be deluded by their weak-ass hand-wringing; they want this. Or rather, they'd prefer the shooter killed more of them. They want to stoke that violence and fear and force them all back into the closet, if not use it as an excuse to engage in direct sadism towards innocents. Doesn't matter if they're calling gay/trans people "groomers", or talking about their "agenda", or worrying about "traditional marriage", every single one of them implicitly supports these attacks. And they need to be reminded of it. Repeatedly. Ad infinitum. Until they either flee public office in shame, or cross a line where legal action can take place against them.

Some big BS right here. The US is the only developed country where this happens so frequently and so deadly\

If we had a thread for every mass shooting, the entire first page of this forum would be just those. And they'd all be in the USA.

"Nothing can be done" says only country in the world where these things happen.

I saw a thread on Reddit where they were trying to work out if this was the shooting with the most casualties. This week. I can't even comprehend how you'd live in a country where things like this are just accepted as a natural part of human existence.
When challenging a Kzin, a simple scream of rage is sufficient. You scream and you leap.

You're right that it isn't just the guns. It's also the deep-seated bigotry, not just in a few hillbilly cranks, but repeated with full venom and hate by sitting members of Congress on a practically daily basis with little to no consequence.

The access to guns make it easier for the bigots to attack their victims. But the motivation is still bigotry. And that's never gonna stop until the USA as a nation decides it doesn't want to define itself, fundamentally, around petty bigotries. Which frankly, would be a first; you're still not over racial or gender divides, or even particularly religiously tolerant as a society.

We dont know the motives for this shooting and I am not going to jump for answers. But there is no denying that guns are the main reason its happening and will continue to happen. Until Republicans decide the lives of their own citizens are worth more than the donations from gun lobbyists this will continue happening

Republicans will no doubt in trading your life if it means preserving guns. They are an effective death cult

It's a mass shooting at a gay club. You don't have to make much of an effort to figure it out.

If it's just the guns, why are nearly all the attacks driven by bigotry in support of right-wing causes? If it's just the guns, surely you'd see a far more even distribution of mass shootings across the political spectrum?

Unless it's not actually the guns that are motivating the crimes.

Thoughts and Prayers, the typical response for any of these shootings by your beloved politicians from all sides...

Reckon at this point the NRA should be footing the bill and compensations for all these shootings.

but his lawyer said to use "They/Them" and someone that attacked gay people would NEVER mockingly use pronouns, especially if it worked it would both drop some federal charges and be a middle finger to the group

nope, they would never do that /s
"Law and Order", lots of places have had that, Russia, North Korea, Saddam's Iraq.
