Enhancement PvE: How to spec at 70 with content patch?

Hi,

I read that new talents and skills will come in a patch before actual WotLK, much like pre-TBC. I begane wondering how to spec at level 70 since we will be playing with this spec for maybe a couple of months while waiting for WotLK.
I tried reading a loooong thread on the subject on elitistJerks forum, but there was so much crap in there i just got even more confused.
So eventually i just decided to try and put something together for myself.

It sounds like spells will have a much larger importance, so i wanted to get Elemental devastation. But at level 70 i will lack 2 points in which i chose to get from Mental Dexterity which i dont like to be missing at all. But is there a better choice?

I absolutely hate those stupid Spirit Wolves. I dont have beta access so i have not actually tried them yet, but i just fear that they will die to AoE on bosses all the time, essentially making them either a very small dps increase or completely useless. But i decided to give them a chance.

I would very much like to hear some suggestions to a better build.

Keep in mind that this is solely PvE. NOT PvP at all.

For one, those spirit wolves will be quite decent when they're done. Key words: when they are done.

As for how to spec at 70, I'd suggest you start following the discussion over at Elitist Jerks, there's no definitive answer yet. It will depend a lot on wether or not it will actually be an improvement to your DPS to be more dependant on spelldamage or not, but there's a good amount of educated guesswork going on.

Good point about Lava Burst. Instant Chain lightning is not worth picking Elemental Devastation for?

I dont see the point in taking Static Charge. If you dont useWater Shield, wont you run out of mana rather quickly in raids?

And why not full Ancestral knowledge, now that int gives AP?

Shamanistic rage should be enough, and if not, you don`t have to use lightning shield all the time. But when you won`t need mana shield up, you get some nice dps increase from static shock imho. 6% chance to do 350 extra dmg isn`t bad at all tbh.

About ancestral knowledge, I`m not sure tbh. 4/5 is max i can get, without messing up static shock(by removing 2 points out of imp shields).

About malestrom, theres nothing except lava burst that gives you 100% chance to triger Elemental devastation, so i dont see any point in putting 8 talent points to go there. Maybe I`m right, maybe not. :P

Still about the same only enhancing the existing things that you are using now. Spell dmg based dps will be useless until ratings change to affect melee and spells alike so you will still have a 5% or so spell crit chance and a 0%+ hit chance so..useless imo. If they DO change the ratings pre-wotlk (which I doubt) then yes spell dmg hybrid might work.

Really after filling the enhance tree you can go either way. I chose the resto path because I do off heal my melee group a lot while raiding, if you've done BT then you know what I'm talking about.

As for the mana situation, it will be back to the pre-totem-twisting situation, as the totems are getting changed in such a way that twisting is obsolete. This means you'll hardly use any mana at all, especially if you keep Shamanistic Rage on cooldown. With the added abilities, we may use a little more mana but I don't see us suddenly quadrupling in mana consumption.

Dropped Maelstroem weapon. It is not of any valid use until we get Lava Burst which wont happen until level 75.

Picked up Imp. elemental shields and Static charge to do extra DPS. This means i wont be using Water Shield, but the general opinion is that I should still be able to have sufficient Mana as long as i time Shamanistic Rage correctly.

Still keeping the wolves although im still afraid that they will die of AoE on bosses rather quickly

Imp. ghostwolf coupled with Spectral Transformation will mean i wont be depending on mass dispel to get out of CC anymore. \o/

I had 1 point to spare which i put in Earth's Grasp for better earth binding totem for the blobs on Illidan.

All in all, it seems Enhancement talents will not change much with this patch. Only gear, gems and enchants >.<

it really depends just how much updates they are releasing in this patch,
if the crit=spellcrit conversion is released in the patch we'll be running around with very high spellcrit as well, which justifies an Elemental Devestation/Shamanistic Rage build.

guess we'll have to see just how good feral spirits are, not sure if i'll go that deep in the tree at 70

Yes, i wonder how much damage the lightning shield would add to a boss encounter compared to an instant lightning bolt or chain lightning if the crit=spellcrit conversion is released. Wish i had math skills

i think to take static shock, MW and 4 talents in concussion. Improved GF is useless for instance.
i think is the best compromise at lv 70 for pve.

this spec sounds about right for pve raiding, ofc if wolf doesn't work or proves too weak (we would need some EJ number crunching) the next talent to pour some talent point in, would be mental quickness :X
but until you get lava burst, maelstrom weapon wouldn't really be top-notch (while remaining really good) :P

I have read the discussion above, and ‘tis my honest opinion that there will be two raid viable specs at 70 using the new talents. One I think will be superior to the other, but of course, no one will be able to tell us yet. Its certain that the first will offer more threat control, where as the second will leave some of it up to chance. However the new threat abilities and buffs given to tanks will probably out weigh anything we do now anyway!

Just to make one thing clear, I will assume feral spirit in both as raid viable.

That build looks to improve your shocks and lightning spells. Lightning spells will be the main fruit of maelstrom until shaman receive lava burst. Your dps rotation will remain the same for the most part, but now involve your instant cast lightning or chain lightning.

This build rather than improving shocks, will instead now focus on using lightning shield as a source of dps. This build may offer less threat control than the one above, however which of the two would prove more potent for PvE, cannot as yet be said.

i try to optimize the spec to do much dps possible at lv 70 and for end game at lv 70.
spirit wolves, in my opinion, r useless in raid i think they're better for pvp

Yes, those both look nice although on the first one i would prolly consider including elemental devestation. But i find myself lacking 2 points to get it 3/3.

I would really like spectral transformation and instant ghostwolf, but i guess they dont really add to the DPS. I just have to rid myself of the love of those talents

3/3 elemental devastation is much more powerful than 4% intellect at lvl 70.

I had that exact build in mind to start with, but if you dont spec 3/3 Mental Dexterity its quite a DPS loss and im not sure if Elemental Devestation makes up for it.
