Meh, I wouldn't choose to listen to a single one of those bands.

This, to me, is fantastic metal:

Or you could look at my last.fm and any band near the top is one that I love:

Iron Maiden - my very first headbang! i was roaming trough my dad's old vinils when i was 6 or 7 yrs old, been a fanatic since then (im now 18)

Metallica - a few years later i was watching TV when i saw a commercial saying they were going to play live in our country and the background music was master of puppets, i had that song stuck in my head for weeks untill i decided to find out more about the band

Machine Head - three years ago, live metallica show with machine head opening up for them, i knew who machine head was but i wasnt really much into them, suddently they come on stage and they do one freakin minf*cking gig, best damn thing i have ever seen in my life, been a hardcore fan since then, i already travelled almost 1000 kilometres to see them in spain, this is the 3rd time in three years hehe =)

Ramp - its a portuguese thrash metal band, some people call them the portuguese metallica, i call metallica the american Ramp.... i first heard them about 10 years ago in the local radio station, i would die to listen to them now xD

    Re: Metal

Although my music taste reaches far beyond the Metal genre and some Metal genre's just total suck ass (just an opinion) there are some bands that I think are totally awesome. Yes, I know, I said totally awesome, not very true-metal like.

So here are some bands I'm really enjoying right now:

    Rosetta
Probably one of my favorite bands I ever listened to. Had the honor to see them live once (this summer would have been the second time if they didn't cancel the European tour) and loved every minute of it. It sounds like post-hardcore, sludge metal made for astronauts. I can also imagine, if big planets like Jupiter would make music, it would (or should) sound like this band. When you hear them the first time and I tell you they've only got one guitarist, you won't believe it. But with cunning use of multiple layers of reverb and delayed guitar play (both on the albums as in a live set) it sounds like they have at least 3.

The vocalist uses his voice for roaring and shouting. The drum patterns have a lot of variations and are tight as hell and the bass player plays groovy-ish lines. Combine this all together with a lot of atmosphere and noise elements and you've got some awesome music.

    Songs
    Ayil - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAyGs84t4Ig
From their latest album, which has a more hardcore approach with shorter and faster songs, this really represents the band.

    Départe/Deneb - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4kAL4OJH9M
From their first full length album (The Galilean Satellites) this song let's you hear how great noise/atmospherical sounds can be combined with metal. A small note, The Galilean Satellites actually consists of two albums; one with the noise/atmospherical sounds on it and one with the band playing. When played simultaneously it sounds like this. But they can be listened apart from each other without a doubt.

    Vatican
A band from Canada that (afaik) only released one EP (Shotgun Evangelium), but it's freaking brutal. I got into these guys because it had the vocalist of an other band I like (Ion Dissonance). They play a genre I (and other people with me) would like to refer to as "Black 'n' Roll". What the hell is that? Well... it's Black metal with a high influence of Rock 'n' Roll to it. It has a lot of groovy passages but with brutal and sometimes high pitched screams.

The first time you listen to it, you might not like it, but after a listen or two you either hate it or love it. Or at least, that's been the case for me (the latter). With fast double bass drums and a loud (sometimes 'slapping' sounding bass) and lyrics that highly focus on religion (as you might expect from the band's name) this is a really nice listen if you like some headbanging with a groove to it.

    Songs
    Paper Dolls - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysn8BZ5Ka1U
    Borgian Excesses - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dX3_73glbRk

    Battle of Mice
A "supergroup" consistent of people from Made out of Babies, Neurosis and more. If you are familiar with or like either 'Made out of Babies' and/or 'Neurosis', then this should be a no-brainer: LISTEN TO IT, if you haven't already! The vocalist (Julie Christmas) who also does the vocals for 'Made out of Babies' is the Björk of Metal, without a doubt. They have very similar ways of using their voice. And the best way I can describe this band is like Made out of Babies meets Neurosis. I know, not the best description for people who don't know it, but that's the best I can do.

Ok, I'll try again. It sounds like magic, dark and scary magic and it has a lot of atmosphere elements to it. It has a "the world is going to end soon" vibe around it. The apocalypse is near and Battle of Mice made the soundtrack for it.

    Songs
The Lamb and the Labrador - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2Dk7OocmtY
    Sleep & Dream - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDYfX5D_O_w

There are many more Metal bands I listen to, but I won't describe them. I will, however, post their name and with a song name so you can look it up and see if you like it.

    Band - Song
    Isis - Holy Tears (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWjhxnVcmgg)
    Meshuggah - Bleed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3an8jdsVM3s)
Narrows - Gypsy Kids (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDpyP7bif0) <--- For people who know/like Botch
The Red Chord - Dreaming In Dog Years (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4P96ARjrP8)
Converge - Wretched World (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YojThNUSpkw) (although this song doesn't really represent their overall music style, it is an awesome song. If you'd like to know how they normally sound you should check out the song 'Last Light' or 'Reap What You Sow')

    Have fun.

Samuel: What seems to be the problem, Mr. pilot, sir?
Pilot: There are snakes on the plane.
    Samuel: FFFFFFUUUUUU

Kind sir please define, MUSICALLY of course, what constitutes god metal and what constitutes bad metal, chord charts and tuning are expected.

It's taking a bit of self control to not make a huge post on this thread, but at the same time, discussing music on the internet can be frustrating because of the ease of flaming/trolling, as well as not having the drive or the time to listen to what everyone else suggests.

I'll just say, that I fucking love Dissection.

    Hear the choirs
Is it the wind that brought back their cries?
    Forged in blood by tragedy
Dark were the thorns of crimson death

By ages so dark we've been sculptured
as fragments of story and tales
By the place that we haunt we are captured
    Against eternity we can prevail

"Thorns of Crimson Death" from the album Storm of the Light's Bane

Damn shame their big comeback album sucked. Dissection's earlier work (both Storm... and Somberlain) was pretty damn good.

    Re: Metal

I'm surprised at how many people know some good metal bands. It's pleasing ;D

    Opeth
    Kalmah
    Dark Tranquility
    Finntroll
    Arch Enemy
    WINTERSUN!
    Ensiferum
    Korpiklaani
    Eluveitie
    Insomnium
    Children of Bodom
More and more...kudos to people in this thread showing me bands I didn't know existed!

    Re: Metal

After getting away from melodic death metal for an extended period of time, in last few weeks I've returned to the style a bit.

I'm surprised how I've managed to miss Edge of Sanity's work all until now. I knew their "hit" song Black Tears, but not much else. Now I got Crimson, Crimson II and Purgatory Afterglow and have listened through them quite a few times. I must say the material is much past that on on Black Tears.

Slaughter Of The Soul by At the Gates is also one of my recent claims. Heard their music at places, but never owned any. Yet to listen to it, but I look forward to doing so soon.

You just bought yourself a classic. When you listen to it, don't think "meh, heard it before". Instead, realise that this is the album that started an entire new era of metal.

Hey, look, another idiot who is unable to detect neither humor nor sarcasm, who gets extremely defensive over someone making a sarcastic post involving his presumed musical taste.

Kind sir, please explain, truthfully of course, why you are so worried about another person's opinion on the genre (Or sub-genre, etc) of music you listen to, a flowchart is expected to make it easier for me to understand the inner workings of the emotional turmoil that is the heart and mind of a teenage boy.

Yeah, one of the pioneers of the genres. It's weird to me I haven't picked up an album by them before, especially since I enjoy the Gothenburg sound. Naturally heard their music in videos, at friends' places and such though.

    Re: Metal

Hmmm you guys have some pretty heavy stuff here. I have a lot of generic stuff but some of my favs are

Lacuna Coil (A bit more hard rock now but their previous stuff is great)
    Within Temptation
And I love Evanescence's heavy stuff (they are considered "pop rock" but they have some headbanger ones like Haunted, Going Under and Whisper)

    Yea I like female vocalists.
