New Ne Obliviscaris EP (re-recorded old material through crowdfunding)

New Slugdge album is on its way! Definitely one of last year's greatest discoveries for me.

Also, posting this year's greatest discovery yet, this album will easily end up in my top 10 this year, it's already in the top 3.

Macabre Omen's new record took some time to grow on me, but I too think it is one of this year's finest recordings. I think what turned me off initially was the sorta cheesy operatic bits. Not that mind too much but I felt the songs played it those parts a little too straight.

I maybe wish the mix was a little punchier in the bass sounds. Like on the title track I feel the drums are not quite hitting with the force and vibrato I expected give the caterwauling guitar and vocals.

I think they almost got it but what's missing is a sense of genuine energy or danger (if you will) throughout the record. When I listen to like Triarchy of the Lost Lovers or this year's Tierra Y Libertad there is a definite sense of fury and passion that I don't hear in Gods of War At War as often as expected.

It is a very good record though.

Edit: Damn, now I just wanna listen to Rotting Christ all day. *looks for the vinyl*

Just picked up Shining's One One One for a mere 9 euro on vinyl. And Jarboe's Indemnity for 5. Huzzah.

Also, apparently the entire A Forest of Stars is now on youtube as a single track:

I sorta been digging this new Sarpanitum.

Technical Death, for those with an aversion to the sub genre.

Just got back from this. I am totally spent.

One of the best high energy, totally balls to the motherfucking walls shows I have seen in a long time.

Pallbearer were good bu the vocals were drowned out by the bass and distortion. The effect wasn't as grand as they seemed to think it was; especially in this venue. I think it would have worked best in a smaller club. But let's just say that while Pallbearer have chops they are NOT anywhere close to the realm of Sun0))) or Sleep. And I already seen the peak of Doom Metal Olympus.

Converge came on before At the Gates. Converge sounded UNREAL- incredible playing and sound. They brought the house down like dynamite. Two mosh pits were going, people losing their motherfucking minds. They played mostly songs from You Fail Me and Jane Doe. Every one was singing along, headbanging and the band had absolutely crackling energy through. Not a single mid-tempo song, almost no breaks for stage banter. Just straight fury for 45 minutes.

There was a short delay for At the Gates. The concert was being filmed for a DVD, so they had to set some things up. I was right in the front row headbanging like a maniac.

ATG opened with the poem from At War with Reality, the Spanish poem about God. Everything was dark. Then they EXPLODED. Death and the Labyrinth, Blinded by Fear, Terminal Spirit Disease and Circular Ruins all back to back. A little stage banter and Tomas yelled "GO!" and the place went insane.

Slaughter of the Soul right into Cold and Under the Serpent Sun. Finishing with Kingdom Gone, Eater of Gods, Heroes and Tombs, Through the Red. They ended with Suicide Nation and came back for an encore of Conspiracy of the Blind and Forever Blind.

Fantastic show! The bands played break-fucking-neck. Everything sounded amazing too.

They played Windows and another song off The Red In the Sky Is Ours. Really diverse set list. ATG played for a while- took the stage at 10:20ish, set + encore ended at 11:50ish. By midnight we were on the way home. I wasn't keeping track of time too closely but that played for a while it seemed.

Had they not been filming I think it might have been a different show. Though as above, Converge and ATG were on 10 for their entire respective sets.

I took some video but also I am like 5'7 and female. It was a tough act to even stay on my feet yet alone shoot video when the crowd were losing their minds for 2 hours. Two mosh pits were going to the right and left of the stage, crowd surfing (I got kicked in the arm & beer spilled on me) and the big circle/slam thing people do was right behind me and my husband.

I was at the very front up against the barrier (I gave Tomas a brofist, I was so close to the stage all night) with my husband standing behind me, his arms were a barrier from being swallowed in the crazy pit/circle thing that was sweeping through the venue like a tornado.

Two guys were arrested/escorted out. A ruckus broke out over drum sticks on three separate occasions. Some girl had her glasses knocked off and broken by a crowd surfer, some other girl got dragged into the mosh via her hair but my husband saved her from going under.

I am not exaggerating when I say this place was going fucking insane. In a good way though. People were hugging, strangers were taking up conversations with you, beers were being passed around. Everyone singing along, all real metal fans. I didn't hear or see any elitist bullshit, homophobia, racism or down talking bands.

Well, except In Flames. A conversation broke out around the stage among 8 of us about how shitty In Flames are these days and maybe Dark Tranquility are headed there too. LOL!

Might go see Electric Wizard play tonight. I am still on vacation.

The Terror Fest is coming soon though and I want to go badly!

I have the option of seeing either The Agonist & Allegeon w/ Product of Hate, Cariosus, Terror In His Presence, Alethia and Dark Passenger. Or Electric Wizard. Tonight.

Seeing Electric Wizard, Pros: close by, home by midnight, Electric Wizard. Cons: Expensive.
Seeing The Agonist/Allegeon, Pros: Haven't seen Agonist or Allegeon live yet, better venue, cheap, good line-up. Cons: About a 2 1/2 hour drive away.

I have about 4 1/2 hours to decide or stay at home and watch Netflix/rest.

It's a busy metal month in my city; Liturgy, Refused, Testament, Exodus, Kastasyde, Nightwish, Sabaton and Solstafir are all coming.

Definitely seeing Refused (tickets already bought), Liturgy I am considering strongly. Solstafir is a must.

I don't like Nightwish but Sabaton has me interested.

Decided to stay home and listen to Sorcery instead.

Been listening to lots of Christ Inversion, Skinless and Morbid Angel lately:

Can't really go wrong with these bands, but these songs in particular have been soothing in that oh so metal way lately.

Since shows have been mentioned it reminds me that I haven't been to a show since 2008, but I'm not missing them all that much. Most of the bands I've ever wanted to see I've already seen or they don't tour. I've got 516 ticket stubs in my collection going back to 1993 so it'd take a once in a lifetime show to really get me out to a venue at this point.

I'm actually only 37, I started going to shows as I mentioned in 93 which was high school for me. Taking exams at 1pm, moshing at 8pm was real fun during junior and senior year. I've been to so many shows because I was a big fan of seeing every show an act would put on in my state when they'd be on tour which could be 2-3 shows sometimes 2-3 times a year. I saw Pantera, Danzig, White Zombie, Slayer, Type O Negative, Clutch and others so many times this way even with the sometimes 3-6 hour drive across the state to do it. The only festival I've ever actually been to was Ozzfest back when those were good, 1997 was the best one for me: Pantera, Type O, Fear Factory, Machine Head with Neurosis on the small stage, killer.

I'd have to think real hard for awhile what tour or one night only would actually have me rushing to a venue to see it. Maybe Devil Doll, the Italian operatic performance art project of Mister Doctor, but that's not even Metal. Maybe if Thorr's Hammer reformed, I always had a huge crush on Runhild Gammalsaeter haha.

Also, they are apparently working on some new material. I'll be interested to hear that. The band hasn't been too active in terms of new material for a good while now. I've been a big fan for years though.

Massively underrated record, definitely one of the greatest melodeath/doom albums I've ever heard. They're the same guys behind Atoma and Enshine for the newbs.

^^ Some of the music reminds me of Therion, though I wish it was either faster or slower paced as I find that more exciting, it feels too midrange for me. Still not bad though.

Not much is obscure anymore in the age of the internet, but this doom gem was basically unknown when it was released and is still very much under the radar today.

That's a lot of shows, indeed... I've been going to them since '87, and do remember trying to recall them all, but it certainly wasn't that high of a number. But like you, it takes a lot to get me in a venue at this point, and there's only a very small handful of bands I've never seen that I wish I did.

I do have tickets to see Steven Wilson in May, and unless Gorguts or Anciients comes around, it's unlikely that I'll go to another show this year.

Clusterfucking, cavernous, high density death metal in the vein of Antediluvian, Mitochondrion, Abyssal, Portal.
