Well I would agree with that, but I've yet to see a lot of people getting into older In Flames, Dark Tranquility and the such...
Not saying that people don't like it, but I guess the ''new'' Melodic Death is easier to get into rather than the Older... Especially considering how older melodic death metal was (more rich, enlightening/technical music).
Like this
People here the new In Flames and shy away from that crap. And I can't blame them.
Furthermore, compare the production of the last Amon Amarth to the first In Flames album and I can easily see the former being easier on the unspoilt ears of the youngsters.
That might be so, but the thing is that melo death is still a rather "soft" form of extreme metal. I personally see it as a gateway to heavier stuff, at least it was for me.
I started listening to metal back in 2002 after hearing Iron Maiden and Anthrax on VROCK (GTA Vice City). After listening to NWOBHM, Thrash Metal and Heavy Metal for a few years I decided to branch out a bit. I discovered In Flames, At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity through an online forum and although those weren't necessarily heavier than bands I had listened to before (Slayer, Kreator, Sodom) I liked them a lot, especially because of the vocals. After a few months of listening to Melodic Death Metal I got bored, probably because the melodies just didn't keep me interested. To me Melo Death is like the happy meal toy, you see it showcased at Micky D's, you beg your mom get you a happy meal, you play with it for a short while, get bored and stow it away, never to be touched again. Maybe that's a bad analogy. What I'm basically trying to say is that Melo Death looked appealing in the beginning, keeps you amused for a short time and then it just gets drab and boring.
Anyway, from Melo Death I went on to Death Metal and Black Metal, two genres I still greatly enjoy because of their great depth, like a good book that you can reread countless times and still discover something new. Over the years I was interested in several other metal genres, but none of them stuck like those two.
Enough blabbing, more headbanging.
While that might be true, I don't think the youngsters fully appreciate or acknowledge the beauty behind classical melodic death metal... Masterpieces like Lunar Strain , Jester Scripts Transfigured etc... which is a shame.
But I can easily see your point... It would of course be far easier to get someone to like In Flames than say, Antaeus/Marduk or Deicide/Krisiun
Hey all, can anyone recommend any bands/vocalists which feature the same style vocals as those of Miljenko Matijevic (may have miss-spelt) and Daniel Heiman please, would appreciate it.
Im into higher power metal style Thanks !
I love this one by Strapping Young Lad.... it's so beautiful and strong at the same time!
Clayman is what got me into In Flames. Every release since then has been one letdown after another
Woah woah WOAH!!! I don't think I've EVER heard any harsh words towards Manowar EVER by anyone who loves Metal before. I had to read your reply a solid 3-5 times just to comprehend it. I'll be the first to Admit that I'm a complete Manowar Fanatic, I have been since I 88'. (Side note: 88' was one helluva badass year, my introduction to Manowar and the movie Willow came out.) In your opinion you feel as tho they CBA to make good music? I personally felt as tho their music took what bands like Iron Maiden pioneered and brought them into the new decade under a new genre of heavier, louder Metal. (I'm aware of the fact that back in 80' when Manowar formed that Iron Maiden were still in their prime @ only 5 years old.) Manowar coupled with other GREAT bands like Dio who formed in 1982 made for one Legendary Decade.
I wouldn't go as far as saying that Manowar are "Cashgrabs" by any means. Hell, not only hold the record at loudest performance but also the LONGEST. They ABSOLUTELY care for their fans AND the music. They, like ANY OTHER MUSIC GROUP out there obviously not only sells their music but also their image. What does wearing Leather Studded anything have to do with the Music?
Their "Generic and watered down" music sells to millions worldwide.
Hail Thor-show thy might. Let thunder roar and lightning strike!
Hurl thy hammer into the fray. And let thine enemies know fear this day!
VICTORY, OR VALHALLA!!!
I've never liked melodic "death metal" myself. I don't even call it death metal, but hey, that's my personal opinion.
1:40 and onwards (2:30 if you want to skip the solo) is just pure nonstop headbanging. Would kill to see Vio-Lence live, too bad it probably won't happen because both Robb and Phil are busy with (the much less interesting) Machine Head.IMO one of, if not, Vio-lence's best song
Kenom: I love the fact that The Tomb Awaits by Entrails was recorded in 2011 and actually sounds that old school.
Nektar: I really see Melodeath as a subgenre of their own, compared to Death/Black/Thrash, instead of a subgenre of Death Metal. Can't say I agree with the melodies boring me, since it's so many unique Melodeath bands that doesn't sound like any other.
As for getting into Metal, I used to only listen to Power Metal (Hammerfall, Stratovarious, Dragonland etc), then discovered Melodeath (IF/DT/ATG, Norther, Wintersun, Kalmah etc), and some months later, Death Metal (Death, Obituary, Morbid Angel, Malevolent Creation etc). Think I had been listening to Death Metal for almost a year before I discovered Thrash Metal (and then I am including the "softer" Thrash like Anthrax and old Metallica aswell, which to this day, still is fucking awesome)
They're (short for They are) describes a group of people. "They're/They are a nice bunch of guys." Their indicates that something belongs/is related to a group of people. "Their car was all out of fuel." There refers to a location. "Let's set up camp over there." There is also no such thing as "could/should OF". The correct way is: Could/should'VE, or could/should HAVE.
Holyfury armory
My first style was Thrash...
I used to sit in front of the tv watching the DVD Binge&Purge...
Real thrash, just awesome, at the time it was my favorite band of all time (I've been listening to Metallica since back at 1996), but then it went to Megadeth, and then both went down my list, Metallica way harder than Megadeth... Today I don't really have a favorite band.
This version of Fade to Black is so ridiculously good... oh my God nostalgia, nostalgia, nostalgia >_<
I can't say I listen to Metallica at all these days... I really was sad when I saw what they had become... my opinion, don't hate :P
Some years ago when I was a wee youngster I remember over hearing a conversation about melodic death metal in a record store and thinking they were talking about Swedish DM bands like Dismember (hadn't discovered At The Gates yet)....cuz, that shit has serious melody (and Dismember was one of the earliest European DM bands I latched onto). Sadly, I just found out Dismember broke up (no idea how I missed that depressing news), so, I dedicate this night to them!

I really dislike dismember's production for some reason. I liked it on the first, second and third album but then everything went so... messy.
Where the hell have you been then?
On Metalstorm, there are quite a lot of Manowar hating going around, generally by people who have similiar views on metal as I do for example in this topic: http://www.metalstorm.net/forum/topi...search=&page=5
The post you quoted here is essentially the same as my post on the bottom of the page with a bit different word usage and there are quite a few there who share my opinion :P.
It is fine if you really like Manowar and really, it is quite possible they do care for the fans and the music AND at the same time engage in blatant commercialism and self promoting (to like extreme levels, which makes them so antipathic to me), and I definitely consider their music to be terribly boring, it could never hold my interest yet some other heavy/US power metal bands could (Iced Earth is one of my favourite bands of all time) and as I stated I oppose this 'trve metal/false metal/poserism' whatever which Manowar brought upon us (or if they didn't then definitely helped promoting and making prevailent) so much that that band's existent is just incompatible with me.
C'mon when people say things like that, I just cannot take them serious. This whole die-for-metal metaller-than-thou attitude is so childish I want to tear my own eyeballs out. Especially when it is coming from one of the safest metal bands on the planet :PI believe in the fans. I believe in metal more than anybody you've ever met. And another thing, I'm prepared to die for metal. Are you?
With that said, like I said, if you enjoy that band it is completely fine and I'm not judging fans for that, but I just cannot stand them at all. Definitely not the worst band in existence but probably the one I love to hate the most.
Oh and 'generic and watered down' music definitely sells. Just look at pop artists. I am not saying ALL really popular music is bad but most of it is and popularity is definitely not a good indication of quality.
Anyone here a big fan of Hibria?
Don't think Timeghoul was posted yet. Great band that's often ignored when it comes to technical death metal.
Thunderstorm, underrated Doom Metal in the style of Solitude Aeturnus (kind of).
