Deathwing = Kefka?

The characters have more than a few passing similarities, it must be said. Both are insane (Kefka, due to the magitek trials, Deathwing due to Old God whispers, possible Demon Soul corruption), both just want to destroy the world for the sake of destroying the world, both have actually caused a cataclysmic event. Both have held possession of a magical artifact containing all the energies of magical beings of their world (Kefka=espers, Deathwing = Dragons). Both were initially trusted members of their groups, but fatally betrayed them (Kefka assassinated the emperor, Deathwing all but exterminated the blue dragon race). *tongue placed firmly in cheek* So the question is, who reckons the developers at Blizz were playing FFVI during the time they were pitching ideas for a new expansion

Deathwing doesn't want to destroy the world just for the sake of it. He wants to destroy the world and kill everybody in it because, in his mind, dragons are the only race worth a shit and everything else might as well be reforged in molten flame.

I don't think so. They're similar because they're the same insane villain archetype. That doesn't necessarily make one copied from or inspired by the other.

Final battle against Deathwing w/ kefka, Dancing Mad plays in the background....gods yes...and people saying archetypes, i get that, not being too serious with this thread, but really? So all insane villains have that specific type of magical artifact, and betray their organisation? Oh, and one thing I forgot to mention, both Kefka and Deathwing have cults worshipping them and working for them. Clearly they are one and the same!

Blizzard do rip story's from other people , many games infact do :P.

However Kefka was a pretty deep char, when you consider how cheesy Snes graphics where that's an accomplishment. But basically they did portray Kefka as often mortal and very much flawed (even after hes ascension). Deathwing on the other hand is quite unrealistic and somewhat god like. That is probably the one big difference i can find between the two.

No, square and blizzard simply just both built a big bad guy using used the same cliches.
