The little boy in me that loves giant robots fighting aliens just about crapped his pants at the awesomeness in this movie (cinematography and choreography were absolutely fantastic).

Does it have it's issues? Yes. But as long as you're not expecting it to be more than a really fun movie of giant robots fighting giant aliens you won't be disappointed.

That point of view would hold true if it was actual fear being inflicted as opposed to cheap startles. You can be startled by a friendly old woman standing somewhere you didn't expect. Doesn't mean she's scary or that there was any fear involved, you just didn't expect that.

To me, that shit has NO place in scary movies. It's so cheap and gimmicky. I want suspence. I want uncertainty. I need to suck back into my seat uncomfortably and catch myself feeling less than safe, which is silly, but its a rare feeling a movie can give you when it totally consumes you for 90 minutes.

    Thor.

6/10. Enjoyed it, but I'm glad it was on Netflix because I wouldn't want to buy it.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space. God invented Netflix so we could watch terrible movies when bored.
    I feel like it deserves a 10/10. Realistically about a 2.5 to 3.

Rise of The Guardians 9/10: I absolutely loved this movie! The way the depict all the Guardians (especially Santa Claus aka North) cracked me up. Story was pretty solid and the animation was exquisite.

    The Hunted (1995): 5 / 10

The movie wasn't very well-recieved by critics, because it's not... good... but it made for perfect late night viewing. On cable. Baked. What's it gots? Ninjas, Christopher Lambert derping, Joan Chen sideboob, John Lone pretending to be Japanese, Yoshio Harada as a badass samurai, and a train scene that should've been aped for The Wolverine.

    District 9:

    6/10

Interesting concept but once again bad guys can't fire a fucking gun and it turns out to be
    a one man army movie.

If you are going to make a movie where a very small amount of guys take on a very large amount
of trained professional killers you better give a reason why the selected few can kick so much ass.

And maybe I missed it, but I don't think anything happened to the white missile turret they
used to shoot down the alien ship in the first try. Why not shoot it down with the same turret when
it's slowly floating towards the mothership?

    Just watched "The Wolverine" 4/10.

    Thought it was diabolical.

The only saving grace is that its Jackman playing Wolverine, which is really down to Singer casting him all those years ago. Honestly the plot was rubbish, most of the characters motivations were vague and unexplained, the action sequences - which were few and far between - were unimpressive and limp...The whole logic of the film was bad. On a side note, did anyone else think Yukio looked like Stewie from Family Guy in one of his outrageous get-ups?

Honestly don't know how anyone would, or even could rate it any higher.

    Meanwhile...

Byzantium - 7/10. Enjoyable, well acted and eerie. Plus its got Gemma Aterton in it. 'Nuff Said!

I've been re-watching some of my favorite movies the past few days. Here goes:

    Leon - 8/10
This is one of my favorite movies of all times, but after re-watching it recently I feel it hasn't grown on me; rather the opposite. I guess the naive assassin doesn't cater to me as much as he used to, and the ending leaves me feeling a bit left out and... I dare say depressed. I'm not sure what the symbolism for going back to school and the forced structure for the girl means to this film, but I feel it as if a free soul is once again trapped by the rules and structure of society.
It still remains one of my favorites and a movie that I can seriously recommend to anyone. If you haven't watched it already you really should.

    Blade Runner - 10/10
Little needs to be said about Blade Runner; it hits so many Science Fiction buttons of mine that it is hard not to absolutely fall for its charm, style and detail. The acting, script, design and build-up as well as its subtle way of telling a very remarkable story is almost beyond me. Near perfection - see it.

    Alien - 9/10
I absolutely love this movie, from start to finish. I can hardly find anything to nit-pick about, really. The only thing that drags it down is how it has aged though time; how the many sequels have butchered the franchise. It's a subtle, real and engaging thriller/horror flick made with incredible passion.

    2001: A Space Odyssey - 10/10
A very heavy movie to watch. It's long, exhausting and relies heavy on symbolism and imagery. Yet, with its few lines of dialogue, it tells a story so complex and detailed you will be left feeling extremely overwhelmed and enthralled. It has some of film-making's most memorable moments and is a beautiful true scenographic masterpiece from start to finish.

    Memento - 9/10
The back-wards movie. It has a few weak moments, but this is a movie like no other. While in essence the movie tells a rather simple and straight-forward story it still needs to be re-watched, twisted, turned and analyzed. It is filmed to perfection with every scene and line cleverly thought out. A must watch. And a must re-watch.

    The Animatrix - 8/10
You either love or hate The Animatrix. I fall in the former category. This bundle of prequels to The Matrix tell stories so unique and well-written it is hard not to feel exhilarated. A few of the stories are a bit blunt, I get that, but in its entirety it shines though as a very well-made flick that anyone who enjoyed The Matrix has to see.

    Next on my list:
Jackie Brown, The Matrix, In Bruges, Life of Pi

    Mud, 8/10.

The hard part about rating movies like this is they have different "values" than the action/adventure/sci-fi/fantasy movies that I often watch. It's hard to hate these movies, and they feel good, but you're not sure what to rate them.

Mud was pretty enchanting when I watched it, but when I look back it feels... weird. It's a movie about love, but there was several plots of several different kinds of love, and none of them ended particularly happy. So one has to ask what the movie is trying to say? Love is hard? Love is not so simple? There was many viewpoints, and I'm not sure if it all sends one big entwined message, or if it's just all kinds of ideas of love and you're left to pick what you find the best one.

Some people love these movies, some think they're okay or "good". I strike a balance with an 8.

    The Avengers 7 / 10

Summary: Plot was shit and the movie was built completely around fan service with over abundance of one liners that replaced the dialog. Points from action being executed decently and for Robert Downey Jr. as the sarcastic and egoist Iron Man, which kinda saves the movie from being complete crap. He has too many "one liners" as well though which kinda reaches the point of being ridiculous. Visually appealing flick but not much more.

Yeah great film. If you're a fan and are interested check out the documentaries On the Edge and even better Dangerous Days, both of which detail at some length the whole process they went through making the film. After watching Dangerous Days my admiration of Ridley Scott soared sky-high. One man sticking to his vision of how a film should be made against a whole army of suits who tried to stop it, that's true dedication.

Over the years I've had to learn to compartmentalise movies so that bad sequel/remake taint doesn't ruin them. Because almost everything I like has been ruined now haha.

I like most of your list

    Elysium: 2/10

    Where do I begin here...

I must say that I've not been a fan of Damon's latest films, I've found them overindulgent in his personal political views (thinking Green Zone here). The trailers had me worried this would be the case again however me and my girlfriend went in with an open mind.

    It stank.

The action sequences I expected to enjoy were ruined with appalling over active camera work. The visuals in District 9 (same director) were something I very much enjoyed. It felt crisp and realistic, despite the aliens etc. This however was giving me a massive headache and whilst the general aesthetics were similar, the aforementioned camera work just ruined every action sequence.

The thing that really got me however was the set-up and plot. It felt like it was being posed as socialism/communism VS. Fascism/Authoritarianism and the film is very clear on one being good and the other evil. It's the same pretence we see in so very many films but pushed to an extreme to the point that it makes little sense; there's little sense for the rich to actually be rich beyond them just being.

The only redeeming quality was the settings, which were very nicely constructed and shot.

Apologies for the rant, tired and annoyed! I enjoy a lot of B and C movies, this is probably the first film to make me actively angry that I spend money (and I got it half price)!

    Elysium - 4/10

I did not like it very much. Neil Blomkamp's touch is definitely there, but it is overrun by classic Hollywood action-movie clichés that make you vomit. The story is, in essence, your average "underdog good guy rises against the much more powerful evil and wins". And oh what a stretched out evil that is. The biggest flaw of this movie is the fundamental inhumanity that the Elysium complex expresses. The injustice is so great it makes little sense, especially since the Elysium complex clearly has the resources to aid in at least some way.

It's all really a drive towards the American health care system, in many ways. A small part of the population has access to great health care because they are wealthy while the rest suffer and has to live in poverty to make do. They are not subtle about it either as there is hardly any symbolism; everything is "medical" related; overpopulated hospitals in rural areas where the ones that need help gets sent home because there's not enough room/money in contrast to the clean, easy-to-use med-pods that can cure cancer in 2 seconds. "We need to get to the Elysium to not die, hurdur."

All it has going for it is a bit of originality delivered mostly by Blomkamp's way to mix realistic poverty with high-tech inspired sci-fi. This blend especially impresses in the first half, but as the movie progresses and the action becomes more frequent and the shallowness of the characters shines through you feel overwhelmed and lose interest. Matt Damon is fairly average too, delivering a performance that isn't exactly the best we have seen but far from the worst. The character he plays, Max, has so much more to offer on screen. I feel a lot of this is as a direct result of the involvement of other characters that intervene and bring down the flow. The script simply doesn't know what to do with it all and it ends up being a giant mess in the end.

    Biggest flaws of the movie:
    - Transfer brain stuff to another brain to then download it into a computer? Why not download it into a computer/memory stick from the get-go?
    - Blow the entire face/head of a person and "brain remains intact". He took a fucking grenade to the face - he should be dead as dead can be.
    - Recreate entire face and skull in matter of seconds. Guy wakes up like nothing just moments after the procedure. Science bitch.
    - In 150 years we will have medical bay pods that can cure cancer, fractures and any other disease/illness in 2 seconds with a simple scan.
    - They can follow him in great detail with satellite image that shows his ID, but can't find him when he runs a few meters away. Wat.
    - Let this one random corporate guy sit on the codes that can take over the entire complex. Genius.
    - Why do they have one system with no fail-safe that runs everything?
    - Why is one person responsible for the entire defense while the president obviously needs a council to make, less-trivial, decisions?
    - Changing one entity (illegal to legal) in the software automatically makes the system treat everyone like equals. Wat.

    This is the end 6/10

It was ok I guess albeit a bit long. The humor was rather meh though and it relied too much on "krass" situations rather than actual wit and humor to get some laughs. On the other hand it did have a few jump-scares. Since I didn't see it in English some jokes must have been lost in translation but it really wasn't that great.

I just saw This is the End as well and I'd give it around a 6-7 too. I was surprised there was actually decent plot/character development, but a little disappointed with how few actually hilarious things were said.

The funniest part, in my eyes, was when Jonah Hill is possessed by the succubus that raped him, and he's speaking in some demonic language, and James Franco goes 'I think it's Hebrew'. Shit made me laugh pretty hard.
