What’s The Fuss?

You have probably heard of the Mysterious Fortune Card by now. Many times a night, a player can be heard using barking tactics for selling mysterious fortune cards in the trade chat channel of World of Warcraft. Sometimes these players are met with troll resistance. A times it may appear that trade chat trolls have thwarted their attempts to sell these new World of Warcraft gambling cards. Have they? Are they legit? Do they really pay that much? Is it a scam? You probably have a few questions about this mysterious new item. I’ll break it down for you.

Mysterious Fortune Card Is Legal

The Mysterious Fortune Card is a new item that is crafted by scribes through the Inscription profession. These Mysterious Fortune Cards are as legit and legal as can be. They were introduced into the game by Blizzard. They are made from an Inscription trainer taught recipe and are crafted items to sell to players on the auction house or in trade chat. They are LEGAL and LEGIT and are a CRAFTED ITEM. Any scribe can craft them.

This is NOT the Old Plain Letter Lottery

Some players had previously been running their own lotteries inside the game’s trade chat channel. These crafty players were using plain letters in the auction house with amounts written on them. You returned your letter to the seller to claim the amount listed on the plain letters you purchased. This Plain Letter Lottery was not technically legal as it was player created and could be a scam or a rip-off with no control by Blizzard. This was NOT LEGAL. The Mysterious Fortune Card is Legal and Legit.

How Does Mysterious Fortune Card Work?

Scribes create the item Mysterious Fortune Card. Any player can “use” the card, which then turns a Mysterious Card into a “Fortune Card”. These Fortune Cards are vendorable for a certain amount. They can be worth 10 silver or all the way up to 1000 gold or 5000 gold. The odds are very low that you will actually get the 5000 gold Fortune Card, but every card does technically have a chance at being the 1000 or 5000 gold cards. Odds are much higher that you will win 10 silver, 50 silver, 1 gold, 5 gold, etc. So it is gambling for gold. Much like pull-tabs or scratchers.

1000 gold

Do They Sell?

Yes! They sell well. Some players have been spending large amounts of gold on these new Mysterious Fortune Cards or Lottery Cards. Players who are barking properly are reporting sales of 3k to 25k in sales in a single night. Some players are buying a few to try out and then are returning daily to make further purchases. Others buy large amounts all at once, often for a slightly discounted price. Prices vary on each server as every server has it’s own market and prices.
I personally have sold 80 to the same player all within 30 minutes. He bought 15 or so off the Auction House and contacted me for another 20 direct. I crafted those and he got 10 more. About 10 minutes later he bought a large stack of 40 more. He got the 50 gold fortune card as his highest out of 80+. A different customer bought a 5 pack of mine off the auction house and his first card was for 1000 gold. When he linked it in trade chat a burst of cards sold, despite the trolls yelling in trade chat. So know your facts and feel free to try it out if the price is right.

Why Don’t Scribes Open The Mysterious Fortune Cards Themselves?

A wise scribe knows that these Mysterious Fortune Cards are worth far more to them as a commodity to sell rather than trying to open them themselves. The odds are not high that you will win, so selling them is on average a much wiser move. The odds are the same regardless of who opens them.

What About Fortune Cookies?

Mysterious Fortune Cards are also required by Chefs to craft Fortune Cookies. If you eat a Fortune Cookie, you will get the Fortune Card as your fortune to sell. PRO TIP: Buy the Fortune Cookies and eat them, if they are cheaper than the Mysterious Fortune Cards to save gold. You still get your vendorable card to sell.

Should You Try It?

That’s up to you. It is legal and legit, but it is also a gamble. Gamble responsibly, if you decide to try your luck.
