    Base building RTS game recommendations

    Title says it all,
Can anyone suggest any modern RTS games that are based around base building? Something along the lines of Rise of Nations rather than something combat based like Dawn of War.

I've heard Supreme Commander 2 should be quite nice for base building and such.
Civilization 4 comes to mind as well..?

A somewhat old game you could try is Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader, if you haven't played those. Stronghold 3 should also be out in 2011 if I remember correctly, so that's something to look forward to. Just don't play Stronghold 2..

A lot of other good old games are Caesar, Pharaoh, Cleopathra, CivCity Rome, etc.

SC2 is NOT a base building RTS.

    1 supply building
    1 unit trainer structure

Thats enough for a potential ''first clash''.
Your greed, your foolishness has brought you to this end.

...so,, you're saying that there are NONE Rts out there?

name ONE Rts where you cant make barracks as your first / 2nd building.

It probably possible in most, but in at least some, it's not very efficient. Ie. Stronghold.

It's not that it shouldn't be possible, but it should be inefficient; building that many units with so little infrastructure should, in my opinion, lead to a relatively weak and ineffectual army that stands little chance of doing anything other than basic base defense.

Of course, I'm one of those heathens who doesn't think a strong defensive option is a blasphemous offense for a game. It's a base, a stronghold and center of operations; it should be hard to destroy.

So far you have more or less confirmed my thoughts that apart from the likes of Supreme Commander 2 there isn't much in the way of fresh Base Building RTS available at the moment

I haven't found a base building/empire building RTS for a long time, i don't understand why, it is such a proven formula

I love those games. Building tons of towers. Making a fantastic economy.

    Nothing notable/modern though.

Old ones though. Lots of good old ones. Poseidon (oldschool) was decent. More like SimCity than Command and Conquer. There was an engine used to make a bunch of RTS games like that. It's like Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, and there was an Asian war one (Japan VS China VS India), and a few medieval versions. . . I don't recall the game that started it, but they all run off of the same engine and techtrees, with different flavors here and there. Bases were important there. In the Star Wars version you could make shieldwalls that took forever to destroy, and they were dirt cheap. You would wall off an expansion, line it with turrets, and unless your opponent only made factories and completely ignored everything else, you could build and march an entire army across the map before they destroyed your walls.

    Lots of epic games.

I'm not sure why they have died off either. Just like business sim games they seem to have vanished and left a vacuum of players.
