[Movies] Great movies ruined by terrible endings

I'm in a semi-rant mode right now. I just finally watched Splice, a "creature-feature" thriller that came out last year and I want to punch the director in the face. The entire movie is a smart and emotional drama raising some very interesting questions, developing the "monster" into a sympathetic character... just to turn around 15 fucking minutes before the end, destroy the entire set up, destroy the developed character and turn the ending into a brainless "monster chasing heroes through the woods" routine for no apparent reason.

Do you remember any movies that were ruined by terrible awful third acts/endings?
"I Am Legend" with Will Smith also comes to mind. First two thirds of the movie were amazing - third act I wish I didn't see o_O
The night is dark and full of terrors...

I am Legend or Splice? I heard about I am Legend book, I know the entire point of it was different apparently.

Minority Report, the ending by Philip K. Dick was a quadrillion times better, insane but logical, just like it should be.

Blade Runner voice over ending comment...

The only ending I remember actually having a large emotional response to was The Mist (based off the King book). It was frustrating, but in a good way...I think. lol

Sorry, I meant I Am Legend. Yeah, it takes place in LA and is much better. The zombies actually have formed a sort of culture, and they're terrorized by him -- just as he's terrorized by them. So awesome.

The movie kinda bored me, and the CGI of the zombies was sort of a turn off for me, but the book sounds really good, I might need to pick that up.

Mist ending was frustrating, but it was also incredibly fitting. It underlined the movie - made it much more unique in a sense.

The things in I am legend are more akin to vampires than zombies. first off they aren't undead walking corpses, second they burn in the sun, and third they have a thirst for human blood.

The "I am Legend" alternate ending was far better than the theatrical version, I suggest anyone that has not seen it does. It actually takes the multiple references that the plague victoms still have something going on upstairs and applies it, instead of just throwing it all away.

My vote for great movie with terrible ending would be "No country for old men".

    1. The Road - At the end of the whole movie after the Father and Son have been trying to stay alive for months. The father is now dying and the little boy will surely be killed in the post apocalyptic world on his own. 1 minute after his dad dies a random family comes from nowhere and says we've been following you the whole time. Shittiest fucking ending to a movie EVER. If you watch 'The Road', switch it off when the father dies!

    2. Lord of The Rings (The Return of The King) - I had never read any of the books or lore before I watched the movies and when the Eagles come to save Frodo and Sam before Mt. Doom explodes, I was like wtf. They didn't mention the eagles in any of the movies and they randomly show up at the end of the last movie to save the day. Absolute bollocks.

    3. I Am Legend - Obviously his explosion could not have taken out all of the zombie-vampires. So it's like how the hell did the woman escape to the human camp? The alternate ending was also crap. Best part of the movie is when his dog dies (so sad) and when he sees the manican Fred on the street.

Oh I don't remember that. I still think they didn't really give enough explanation about them, couldn't Gandalf had atleast included them in one of his tales so we had an idea who they were?

Frodo saying: 'Look, it's the Eagles.' just didn't cut it for me.

That's why they are making The Hobbit! The real backstory to Lord of the Rings. Actually that's The Silmarillion, but lets not go there

I thought the "alternate ending" for I Am Legend was the original plan, and where the story was leading up to in the first place, but that somebody along the line decided explosions were better or something silly.

I am Legend is a remake of the old movie which was changed from the book. The book is better and explains the name better (he comes to realise he's the boogie man (legend) to them now), the movie had too much of that happy open ending crap.

    My vote is A.I.

Yeah I thought it made a lot more sense when "I am Legend" refers to him being their legend, not humanities savior kind of legend.

Splice was good until it turned into a strange incest-like creature feature, then it just got awful.

Signs ending was horrid... actually, most all of m night's movies have horrid endings.

'Terrible' endings exist because movies must have a happy ending. Sure, the main character can die saving the world, but the world must still be saved. This is why there are many Deus Ex Machina type actions like the look-we-were-here-all-along family (didn't see the movie but it's a good example).
As for the mist, i absolutely loved the ending, it was at least as fitting as all of them being saved and i think a whole lot more in the spirit of a stephen king story.
