Please because i cant, for the life of me, find any reasons to like this game for more than just another fps, and i cant understand why people glorify it as one of the greatest games of all time.

It's very atmospheric, and the story was far above the standard fps trash.

Its a fantastic game due to its atmosphere and its story line, the lore in the Bioshock universe is so rich it doesn't even compare to other fps. But then again most people that play FPS's don't look for lore.
Good storyline, good graphics, fun mechanics and a great setting. The story is particularly nice, since in most FPS games the story boils down to "Here's your gun, go kill shit".
The game play was average. Really, nothing new, some magic style stuff and some "SHOOT ERRYTHANG!" style stuff. But the storyline, THAT is why a lot of people love Bioshock (me included). It is very in depth, lots of back story, a great atmosphere, and a lot of tension. The game has an amazing storyline. One of the best (IMO).

alright i will agree with you when you say the art design and graphics were good, but the story? uh what? it was just like any other story. betrayal etc.
maybe i dont appreciate the story because i never played the second one
Excellent environment and feel. Smooth and pretty. It gives you an actual reason to kill things every step of the way, unlike just another fps where you running around blowing shit up for the sake of it. Plus the whole capitalism vs. socialism extremes in the background story.
The second one builds on a different idea (bioshock 1: no control bioshock 2: consequences), the reason the first one is such a big deal of a story is the nature of the betrayal. It's not just "lul I was actually bad, not good", it was *SPOILER kinda* you had no control over some of the stuff you were doing *END HIGHLIGHTED SPOILER* It also had a lot to do with insanity and the degredation of society. Also heavy on Ayn Rand ideology. It's a very very solid plot for a game, almost to the point where it would be better as a book (And I cant wait for the book after reading the released excerpt).

Excellent environments, great story and very immersive. The art deco 1920s setting is really cool as well. There were political themes in it that probably went way over the head of most braindead gamers. The entire society of Rapture was loosely based, rather poorly unfortunately, on Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand as well as some of her other works I believe.
It also had Mr Bubbles.
YepOmg, they're actually making a Bioshock book?
It's called Bioshock: Rapture. Its a prequel novel telling the tale of the building of Rapture, starting (I think) at Ryans early years all the way to the New Years party (one again, IIRC).

The story is very good-it makes you feel like you are in the game. And one of the good parts it also includes somewhat of a free-roam. As well as the well-done moral choices in the game with the little sisters. It's not the average modern fps trash that seems to be popular these days.
