AMD Phenom II 955 x4 and ATI Radeon 6870

My GF is looking to buy a computer, she's found one she can get built online which includes a AMD Phenom II 955 x4 processor and a ATI Radeon 6870 graphics card. the computer comes to £400 roughly with everything else needed (Except monitor/mouse/keyboard ect) and we were just wondering if how this will run games such as Aion which she is currently playing. She cant afford to spend any more than 400

I ran the Aion trial on my old 955BE and 4850 without much issue.

that doesnt really mean much to us unfortunatly, we're not technical atall! :P has taken me about 2 weeks to decide on my own computer and getting my head around what i need

It will work, but it's... old technology, and probably not very upgradeable in few years.

how well do you expect it would perfom? just on games such as WoW to give us an idea?

i guess they would 'run', not insanely well however, medium - high without much issue i suppose. not higher though.

you can see my spec in my sig and sometimes i lag quite a big in org

I'm using the same Processor, but a 6850 card, which I'm guessing is slightly worse than the card you're talking about. I run WoW on full ultra and usually have between 40-60 fps. That said though, my Monitor is only 1280x1024, meaning it's running better than if I were using a bigger monitor.

In WoW you can turn all settings to "high" using 1920x1080 monitor in the middle of orgrimmar/stormwind, and will see about 30-35fps speed. 10-man raids will run bit faster, 25-man raids bit slower. On 1680x1050 monitor speed is probably around 45-50fps.

sounds like it will do the job well enough for the price we are paying. And yeah but she doesnt just play Aion, its just the game she is playing atm.

We've also found the Nvidia Geforce GTX 560, is that better than the ati radeon 6870?

They are about the same calibre if it's a non Ti version.

TBH The build OP stated should do the job it's intended for. Aslong as she doesn't want something collosal such as enthusiast settings in the most demanding of games, namely crysis 2, she should be fine. It will run MMO's like WoW and Aion on Ultra given you throttle the shadows and edge-smoothing a little.

    I run Crysis 2 maxed on a 955 and a 6850.

You don't with the DirectX 11 and High res patches unless you run 640x480. Even a single GTX 580 only runs it at 40-50 fps with 1920x1080 so unless you consider a low resolution decent or less than 10 FPS playable you're not maxing Crysis 2.

That's the exact same setup i run, except i have the step up from the 955 which is the 965, but tbh it's the same chip. I have the 965 overclocked to 3.8ghz, the 6870 slightly clocked at core clock 950 and memory clock 1150, alongside with 4gb of ddr3 1600 ram, and a 1920x1080 monitor, i have every setting in WoW maxed including most of the edge smoothing features, if i remember i have them both to the second to last on those but with them max or not it seems the same when i tested it. Now with that being said I'm running smooth practically 60fps everywhere, besides org because there is too much going on there so i'm usually about 30fps in org. Keep in mind i leave v sync on so i could be reaching higher fps than i am capping at. As far as other games I've thrown at it, Crysis 2 AND the original Crysis run on maximum settings smoothly on my rig. I feel that should be enough information for you to decide if it's worth it, bang for buck you can't go wrong. I'm sure you'll get plenty of intel fanboys who will tell you to go their way but am3 socket is going to be reusable when the next gen bulldozer releases, so that means if your mobo is compatible you won't have to upgrade that as well to increase your performance even though it might be recommended to do so anyway. You may have to do some slight overclocking like i did to get the same performance but it's not too hard if you look up some guides online, hope i helped .

    I have a Ph 955 no OC with a HD 5870. It's all right most of the time, 40 - 60 fps everything maxed, 1920 x 1080 on a 22' monitor.

And you should buy more than 4 G ram.

Try to build a computer ,on the site you're using, with a core i3 2100 and h61/h67 motherboard , same Ram , 400-500w power supply any HDD really and take the GTX560! instead. Im pretty sure its possible, should cost about the same but it'll be alot better and offer upgradability because the socket LGA1155 is new and in few year or so if you feel like you need a better CPU you will be able to upgrade and it will not be old stuff that u regret like u will with the 955.
