    My Photography

    Sup dawgs.
I've been getting into photography lately, and I was wondering what you guys think. I'm looking for some constructive feedback regarding the overall feeling of the photos, the uniqueness, the emotion, etc.

Click ON the pictures, they are very high resolution. Thanks! It's just a hobby btw, I am by no means a professional photographer, I just started this a month ago.

Thanks for the feedback. That's actually my dad and my niece. A little candid photo while she was crying.
So you think I should focus more on people than landscape?

For me? I really prefer pictures of people. The pic you posted is a perfect shot for me.

Pretty cool, I like the ones where you caught everything in motion like the one Fuzzzie linked above.

Thanks. I really love the ocean/waves, but it's hard to capture good shots of waves. Most seem interesting when you take the shot, but when you get back home they are very bland and you end up forgetting why you took the picture.

Don't worry so much about the waves. The thing that captures my imagination with the pic i linked is the two people there.
    It's really a good shot.

They are great, you indeed do have a very good eye. Good job on those keep up on this

And to expand on Fuzzzie: there are different types of photos. Some simply document something, you wanna show something interesting to others (i.e. the wheel clock). Some may be intended to capture emotions (like the pic Fuzzzie said he likes), some are meant to amaze your mind by the complexity and lighting and whatever (the ship photos, love these, or for example the lighting on the parrots). Some are supposed to capture a moment in time that you want people to partially experience with you, being there with you or not. And more and more...

So I don't think you should only concentrate on people. It would be a waste, because you can obviously take different kinds of photos too and express different things through them.

    Cheers Sausages.

I agree with what you say. I personally think candid photos of people are the most interesting. Certainly landscapes and scenery can be great. It's a lot harder to invoke emotion with those sorts of shots to be honest. It can certainly be done, but looking at Master Guns selection, I'm trying to point him in a direction that works for him. The landscapes are great, but.. albeit.. plain. That one photo struck me.

Some photographers can do landscape and invoke all kinds of emotion. For me the one picture of his dad and niece did so much more for me than any other photo.

I went to school for this kind of thing lol.. not that it helps me much now... but I feel that that's the strongest photo.

I'm not trying to say you're work is bad (it's pretty good, actually) but a lot of the pictures you've taken are snapshots. In my eyes, there are two types of photographs, pictures you would use in newspapers/magazines or just memories you want to preserve, and pictures that would be considered art. Snapshots are used in journalism, where as a person who photographs art "creates" the photograph (through posing of people objects, lighting, and camera angle, photoshop, etc.). I'll give you an example from some pictures I took.

    Snapshot:

These Two are heavily photoshopped, but I still wouldn't consider them art, mainly because I had no control of the environment they were in (no tripod either).
    Flower

    Wind Chime

    Created Photograph:

    Camera angle example

    Photoshopped example

Object posing, this isn't a great example, but I couldn't find any of my others.

    Camera angle and lighting

I guess the question I have is, are you looking to take pictures as an art form, or as a form of remembering an event?

I'm looking to take pictures as an artform, and also journalism. I want to make it a profession. Journalism is an artform, though. Not everyone has what it takes to do either, or both.
And none of my pictures are photoshopped. I don't even have photoshop. I just edit the color using iPhoto.

Very nice, I've been doing photography for a number of years. Nothing too serious, just fun stuff, I am more a landscape with a bit of dabbling into abstract type. Where where the pictures near the end taken, they almost looks like Balboa Park in San Diego.
Orks, Space Marines, Rift (<---- Links for pics BTW)

I don't think that the two forms of photography are quite so separate as you may think - one of my favorite daily rituals is looking at 'Day in Pictures' on BBC online. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-14402319 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/in-pictures-14417354 These are all photographs taken by photojournalists, and I would consider almost all of them to be art.

As for the OP, you've got a good eye! I really recommend continuing to focus on the way you photograph living subjects, because that seems to be your strongest aspect here.

You do have a good eye and a photographer's aptitude.

I'm fond of the landscape photo "dscf358h.jpg" though I do agree people photos seem to have the most appeal.

My hubby is a photographer and his approach to how to make a good photo is to fill the frame with everything important. This actually proves to result in good stuff and works very well even though it isn't always the best method. The reason he thought that way was because of the film processing costs before digital cameras were available. Even though he has the latest and greatest digital camera toys now, he still uses the mentality to "fill the frame to save on costs" to great effect.

I believe the true photographer is always ready to "get the picture" even if it's inconvenient. Stop the car if there is something worth capturing. If you aren't willing to sacrifice for the moment to get the shot, you may not become the greatest, but only be a photo hobbyist. So you have to decide how important it is to you. And be aware of the cost of all the toys this art will be. I know this from experience and my hubby isn't going to be greatest in spite of all his investment. He doesn't stop to take the picture at the best sunsets. *sigh*

If I could get http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/6414/dscf3886w.jpg shot in the width and not the height (if this makes any sense), I'd see myself buying it and hanging it in my living room for sure.

A bit typical perhaps, but I would cut it in 3 pieces, green water on the right and left side and the leafs in the middle.
