I'm fairly sure others can still add you. I think I had friends before any games. Also, you should just download a smaller game to get it over with, I think.

Getting a free game won't help. You'll still need to buy something. TF2 was recommended to you because you can buy things with micro-transactions.

I'd just get some cheap, small game that you might enjoy.
