Sandy bridge motherboards with ivy bridge compatibility

Hey folks. Some time ago (before IB was released), there were several sources stating that most current SB mobos would be compatible with IB with a bios update. The slot is the same, so that's not an issue, but I never saw any "official" yes or no from neither motherboard manufacturers or intel.

Does anyone know the final verdict?

It depends on chip set used, if you want to know if your motherboard supports ivy bridge go to your manufacturer page and check CPU compatibility list

Many support it out of the box, some require a BIOS update. Consult your motherboard manual or the manufacturer's website to find out which applies to you.

Look for "22nm" CPU support, as my Asus P8P67 BIOS updates on the Asus website didn't ever say "Ivy Bridge" specifically, but rather, "support for future 22nm technology processors" or something very similar.

I use a z68 MoBo (Sandy bridge plat) with a 2500k. afaik Z77 and Z75's are the only boards that support IB right out of the box. I have updated my z68 BIOS myself to add the support for 22nm (Ivy Bridge). Be careful of this because SB and IB's socket are the same, 1155. If you are planning on buying a new IB cpu along with a mobo, go for a Z77.

If you wanted to kill the cpu that'd be a great way to do it.

    No they're not, they're socketed.

    That right there is false.

Soldered in the socket .. so that pretty much saying theres no socket , because you cant fucking upgrade. kthx (but they are not all like that, some are not soldered)

No laptop cpu's are soldered in, that would kill them. They are simply mounted onto the mobo, instead of sitting in a socket which allows you to replace it.

Yeah this is completely false info. You're probably thinking of GPU boards. No reason to get hostile, we all learn something new every day.

    This^^

I work on full workstations and laptops every day. You would NEVER solder a CPU. EVER!

It is however encased in the MoBo so upgrading is not an option. At all. You may be confused with other parts however such as: graphics cards, sounds cards, NIC's... Those can all be soldered and in many cases are. Hell, in the new macbook pro w/retina display, nothing is upgradeble. It's the most unfixable computing device EVER!

While a pain in the ass, you can usually still get to it to upgrade or replace it. It does involve removing the heat pipe(s), blower fan, and such. I upgraded my previous notebook, and took apart my existing one to make sure I could when I was toying around with the idea.

Yeah, it's hard, but CPUs can be upgraded. The real question is whether or not IB and SB are compatible in the same mobo. Which is what I asked ahah
