I loved the atmosphere and story, there was a good variety of difficulty, and a lot of the bosses were really fun. I guess I'm a bit insane because I thought Firefighter was really fun to heal. Doesn't hurt my favorite mount is from there too (Mimi's head). And Algalon does have one of the coolest looking rooms in the game.

I started playing in Vanilla, I hate everything else in Wrath, but Ulduar was still amazing. I think in my case it was partly because it was a gold nugget in a big pile of shit to me. Not my favorite raid, but it was still extremely good.

Everyone is talking about how cool the titan stuff is, to me the cool thing is Yogg-Saron and how he corrupted everything. The structure and look of the raid is amazing, but to me it wasn't the titan part that was so good, but more so Yogg-Saron's influence and his shadow watching the raid all the time.

I am probably biased because I was in a shitty raid guild when it launched and didn't transfer until after ToC was released, so by the time I got to do any serious raiding in there it was already outdated. I like a lot of things about the instance... it's huge, lot of bosses, interesting mechanics, organic hard modes. For whatever reason it just doesn't get me going, though.
    * Nonlinear path. That was a lot of what made it so interesting.
    * Multiple optional bosses, including a "hidden" boss (Algalon). It was nice to skip junk fights like Razorscale when we no longer needed them. It also added to backstory quality. (To compare with the current tier, Blackfuse and Thok could've been optional and the story wouldn't change a bit)
    * In-game "hard mode" triggers that felt like part of the story. ("DO NOT PUSH THIS BUTTON", /rw Do NOT talk to Keepers, etc). I wish they'd kept this up. I fear they got lazy when the Nerubian raid that should've been in 3.2 cratered.

(edit) I started in Patch 1.3, btw.

OP I'm sort of in the same boat. My guild at the time was still doing Naxx when Ulduar came out (yes we sucked). Finally in June/July we finally decided to step into it. We had some early success getting 5 bosses down but we hit a wall. I left and joined a guild that was doing TOC and while we went back there from time to time but we never did it on a regular basis.

Fun difficulty level with awesome hard mode button, good boss encounters, great Norse god inspire lore. It was also the last Raid before Blizzard went down the horrible multiple difficulty mode model.

And Naxx was a gigantic fucking let down from TBC where we just had 3 great raids. So by following Naxx its warmly remembered.

From a lore standpoint I have been interested in dwarfs and titans from Classic. Finally I was given answers to years long journey. From a design standpoint, the raid environment drew me in and told me a story. The narrative made me feel like I was in the moment and doing something important. I found a lot of the fights fun along with a number of the bosses emotes. I am glad I was able to clear Ulduar prior to ToC even if it was just in 10 man. Also did the hard modes and they was fun as well and was something new.

Good storyline, extremely cool environment, winged structure with definite progression; really well tuned in terms of difficulty.

It's been the best raid conceived and realized by Blizzard. Though i must say MoP raids, while not being at that level (nostalgia here has some impact anyway), are really enjoyable.

In near all of the raids you can say that there's a thing wrong - on Ulduar at maximum you'll find people say "i didn't like it much", but they are not stating any issue with it.

Because it was during Wrath of the Lich King of course. People who had been playing since Vanilla or TBC thought it was still cool (mostly), and the new players got an experience that has never been the same. You could level to max (level 80 duh) and have a full T10 251 4pc set without much effort. In essence it was alt friendly or even new player friendly and it still had the attention of the veterans. This is just my personal opinion, not a fact by any stretch.

Edit: Oh and it also rewarded one of the coolest titles ever, Deaths Demise, for the realm first kill of Yogg +0. <----Also an opinion :-)

Tier 11 (BwD) Also 3 different raids to choose from, Tier 14 (3 different raids to choose from). T12 (first 4 or 5 bosses to choose from in any order you wish). And T13 and T16 to an extremely small extent.

It was a very good raiding tier. Mimiron and Freya(3 elders) was truely amazing encounters.

The fact that when you kill Mimiron's first vehicle, he uses a "can opener" to release the second.

It's that sort of creativity that made Ulduar stand out imo.

Because Titan panels, Forgemasters, Lore about the Universe > Some fucking bullshit <emotion X> Sha in every single god fucking damn dungeon.

I seem to recall people complaining about the start of it and how much complaining there was about the vehicle combat of Flame Leviathan. And then there were the complaints about accidental activation/non activation of hardmodes (which lead to the simple dungeon difficulty toggle). And then the complaints of an impossible boss. And then the complaints of an optional boss that you had one or two attempts before it was gone for the week.

Other than that though, it was an awesome raid, like any other is, if you ignore what you do not like about it. It is great now when you can overgear and solo it....

I liked Ulduar mainly because of the old god. I love old gods and since the Sha are connected to the old gods I find them interesting too. However I would have loved them if there weren't so damn many of them.
