Patching a big of old code is often even worse than patching new code. And it's based on the new client, how the code actually is... we don't have any source code, so we know sh*t.
Welcome to the classic experience.
Maintenance of over 8 hours or more werent an exception.
Too bad account management doesnt show your gametime purchases no more.
1 day added as compensation stuff all over the place back then.
Compensation comes when you lose half a day minimum.

Well, when you take old stuff and put to use, things will need more maintenance. They explained why they had to be down. I thought you wanted the vanilla experience?!
FOMO: "Fear Of Missing Out", also commonly known as people with a mental issue of managing time and activities, many expecting others to fit into their schedule so they don't miss out on things to come. If FOMO becomes a problem for you, do seek help, it can be a very unhealthy lifestyle..
WoW runs on Oracle DB's and since everything what players do is saved it might take up a big portion of the maintenance schedule just to keep the DB fresh with some correction/optimizastion scripts and new indexes for most likely huge tables of data. Might just some backup routine they do in this schedule to keep the game data safe. I dont think the maintenance crew does anything with the game code at all and is just running a few scripts and performance checks.
Who knows, maybe they just run some major DB statistics to analyse player activity and it would slow down the servers/DB's to much to do it outside of the maintenance.
Old game code, new game code what crazy thing to think that they work with game code on a tight scheduled maintenance day.

Only 8h of maintainance for a patch?
I demand 3 days of downtime followed by 2 days of server instability and several hotfixes.
With an appropriate number of One Day Exempts, of course.
