Campus cop shot after Texas governor boasts guns on campus “pose no danger"

Two years ago, Govenor Abbott signed into law Senate Bill 11, which requires colleges and universities in Texas to allow students to carry concealed firearms on campus. The law took effect one year ago.
The morbidly fascinating GEN-OT thread from a year ago.

Unfortunately a a 19-year-old student is accused of fatally shooting a Texas Tech University police officer at the campus police station Monday night.

Nine days prior Governor Abbot tempted fate by tweeting:
Concealed carry poses no danger on Texas college campuses. The dire consequences never happened. @NRA #guns #txlege
As someone who teaches at the college level I give my students a PSA about mental well-being. Since coursework can be emotionally stressful, especially during finals week. Adding guns to a campus with thousands of stressed or depressed students seems like an invitation to tragedy.

So was the guy a CC permit holder or just an idiot with a gun that killed someone? One would be a lawful student deciding to break the law, the other would be someone unlawful to start with breaking the law again. That's assuming I'm understanding Texas law correctly ( one of the articles wanted me to sign up for stuff so I couldn't read it ).

I am sure this drug dealing murderer wouldn't have killed this officer if they had only banned conceal and carry on Texas campuses. He wouldn't want to break the law by illegally carrying a gun...

Oh wait... A 19 year old can't legally conceal and carry, so not only is your premise wrong, but banning conceal and carry on campuses is entirely irrelevant to this situation.

I find gun laws work really well against criminals .. we know they all obey the law when it comes to gun control even if they dont when it comes to murder.

Everyone is lawful until they break the law, how convenient for gun nuts.

So one murder out of the 15,000 we have annually, and this is supposed to be significant because it occurred on a campus?

Sorry, it's not that interesting or significant.

If people on these forums actually cared about preventing loss of life they would spam about needing to legalize drugs. So I'm not really convinced you guys actually care that people die. You just politicize these events into irrational gun control debates.

Maybe you do legitimately care, you're just too stupid to see this is one drop in the bucket compared to changes we could make which would have a real impact.

The cops managed to get him all the way to the station and didn't think to search him and keep him in cuffs until they were 100% sure he had no weapons? People shit on the cops all the time for being over the top, but look what happens when they are too nice.

He's 19. He can't have a CHL, so it was just a random dude carrying a gun, and completely unrelated from the law passed.

For that matter, why would anyone bring a weapon anywhere that is not a warzone?

Last semester, 2 criminals boarded the bus at my university stop and basically kidnapped it for a while, getting money from every single passanger and their cellphones.

I avoided it because I was in a terrible mood and wanted to skip one of the classes, so I left earlier than usual.

He didn't. It wasn't 'at school'. They apprehended him in the dorms during a security check, and he had drugs (and a gun). At the station, he pulled the gun, shot the cop, and ran.

Again, it has nothing to do with the law. It was just a criminal with a gun.

    Coz 'Murica.

I was just listening to a podcast that explained that the Second Amendement talks about a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people (in the context of a well regulated militia) to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

So why everyone needs 4 M16s is beyond me.

How long did it last? We have police in every second street in the city.

No, I didn't say that. I'm not sure how you inferred that.

I'm simply saying the law passed has no relation to what happened, and neither encouraged or prevented anything.

All the reports say he "Pulled a gun" which seems to imply that he had it on him.

That's how it works in most countries. Other countries just try to limit the the possibility of unlawfulness by not giving guns to everyone and their grandmas.

Well there is actually more to it than that. Part of that also included the ability for citizens to rise up and overthrow the government if things got out of hand. Heck there were some of the original crafters who thought a good revolution every so often was the only way to keep things on the right track ( believe it was Jefferson that has mainly been sighted on this ).

They wanted to make sure that individuals had the means to defend themselves not only from foreign invaders, but also from it's own government. We tend to forget that at the time this was written not only did we have the English to worry about, but also the French and Spanish, and whether right or wrong the natives. TBH I'm not sure they even believed that this thing would last as long as it has, there was a whole lot of hope when the US Constitution was written.

It was also written at a time when a few hundred men with long rifles could literally storm the capital and take over, if the government got out of control.

Just imagine if that happened today.
