1 FPS While trying to play Fortnite

    Hello Everyone,

A series of events seems to have led to me being unable to play Fornite. A month or more ago I was playing the game fine.

Back about 2 weeks ago I was trying to play the new CoD Warzone game and was unable to load it due to an error I got when clicking Play. It turns out my AMD driver was out grossly outdated. After updating and trying to play again it worked.

Come 2 days ago I go to try and play Fortnite again and as soon as I get to the lobby screen, my GPU and RAM spike up to 100% usage and I drop to less than 1 FPS. I tried joining a game and the best I got was basically a screen update every 2-5 seconds, making it literally unplayable.

I've tried a few things from google so far (reduce FPS limit from unlimited to 60, reinstall) and nothing so far. Prior to this the game ran smoothly for me.

    CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: ASRock Z97M Pro4 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
    Memory: Crucial Ballistix 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
Storage: Crucial MX100 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 270X 2GB TWIN FROZR Video Card
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit)

So bit of an update. Something is certainly strange. I tried playing again, same exact lag. I decided to go into a game and nothing changed, except that the game itself is registering as if I wasn't lagging. In fact when I turned on my FPS monitoring, it is showing me at 60 FPS, but the game itself is unplayable. If I fire a weapon, reload, switch weapons, all of it happens behind the scenes (I can hear it happening) but it just doesn't show me it happening.

I know its not what you may want to hear but AMD drivers have become such a shit show that......good luck. I have an AMD Radeon VII and between the Black Screens, choppy ass game play, etc I probably won't buy another AMD video card. I have two monitors with freesync and 144Hz refresh. If your game can't reach 144 then it looks choppy as hell. I turned off freesync and capped my games at 60 to even make them playable.

I can't really offer you a solution because it changes from driver to driver. You probably should be upgrading to Windows 10 as well.

Yea kind of wishing I went to W10 when it was free, but I like W7. And what is odd is Fortnite worked prior to me upgrading my drivers.

I may try using a slightly older driver to see if that works.

If you upgraded your driver from a pre-Adrenalin 2020 Edition version it's advisable to do a clean driver installation, this is an option you can choose when installing the new drivers.

I'm pretty sure it still is free. I recently installed W10 on a second PC and used an old windows 7 license key without any issues. It might be worth trying.

What SoulForge said is sadly true and is the main reason why I was basically forced to switch back to Nvidia, AMD drivers just aren't up to scratch. When I was using AMD they were cheaper and better for overclocking, but despite that the drivers kept having problems that couldn't be ignored, and it isn't only compatibility stuff; the ccc software in general simply wasn't good enough.

It's a higher power telling you you shouldn't play such a shitty game.

    Really.

It still is free if you download the utility from Microsofts website. Here's a link to the Windows 10 update tool that will update Windows 7 to Windows 10 for free. Little secret not many people are aware of. Also, here's the tool to remove all the AMD drivers so you can do a clean install. I'm thinking that because you updated from such an old driver that it broke it. Use the AMD Cleanup Utility and restart the PC, then do a install of the latest drivers.

I will try these when I get home! I guess I've used W10 so much at work now I actually like it, so if I can upgrade I will.

So I did this, did the factory reset option for drivers, everything was uninstalled and then re-installed and the game is still choppy as it was before.

Does it make sense that the game worked fine prior to the update but not after? COD (60 FPS) (while it put a massive drain on my CPU on loadup) still works fine and WoW (100 FPS) (my main game) plays fine as well

Did you use the Display Driver Uninstaller tool so it cleans everything up?

No. I just downloaded the new version and used the factory reset. I'll try the uninstaller next.

Next step likely is a reformat (needed one anyways) and upgrade to W10.

You can simply get a Win 10 key from a grey market site for about 15$ or less.

Theyre legit keys. They are simply so cheap because they are bought in countries where, in the local currency, it works out to like 5$, and then people resell them.

I've done this multiple times, but I've also upgraded Windows 7 to Windows 10 multiple times for free. I would just do the free upgrade and save the $5.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble with Fortnite. You've already tried many things, but have you checked for GPU driver updates?
