    GW2 and RP.

So, I am a big fan of RPing, both in game and on these forums. Out of all the hopes I have for Guild Wars 2, a designated RP server is #1 on my list right now. What I'd like to know is how much interest there is from other GW2 fans for this? Let's face it, the game is ideal for RPing. The cities are living and breathing, the events offers so many different scenarios to act out, personalized story lines make up your character, etc. Guild Wars 2 is, to me, a dream come true for someone who enjoys RP and storytelling.

Anywho.. What are your thoughts on GW2 RP? Are you planning on checking it out? Would you like a designated RP server? Have you had previous experience with RP and how do you think GW2 RP will be in comparison to that?

If they made RP Servers, I would wish they would make them strict, so people who were on the RP servers actually role played.

I don't know if they are going to make RP servers, but I think so...

I'll probably do light RP. People who get too wrapped up in tend to weird me out.
Human progress isn't measured by industry. It's measured by the value you place on a life.

    Just, be kind.

As a member of Moon Guard, I'm really hoping that we get a designated RP server in Guild Wars 2. There's simply too much potential to pass up the idea of RPing, with dynamic events, large-scale cities and home instances. It certainly sounds more interesting than sitting around Silvermoon or Orgrimmar all day. However, I haven't heard anything confirming or denying the possibility of an RP server, though I do remember reading a response from a dev who supported RPing in GW2 (can't remember where).

Looks like it's time to be breakin' out the trusty ol' RP quote, eh?

...and I can't find it again. Of course. The gist of it is that a server with a "RP" Label isn't gonna be happening.

    BAM! Here's the good stuff:

It's a list of tools that she believes games should have if they want to truly support RP communities in an official capacity.

Slapping an RP label on a server and calling it good is not going to cut it. If you put the RP label on there and tell people that RP standards won't be enforced by customer support, what is the point of having the tag at all? Putting a label on something comes with the expectation of service. Sanya Weathers was simply stating that if a company decides to label servers "RP" then they had better follow-through on that with the back end tools to support that.

I've been on RP servers in MMO games that were community-organized and community-driven. From my perspective, it worked out really well. We love all parts of our community, including RPers. I've been known to RP at times, anything from table-top RP to LARP.

We want to support RPers, and just like with other parts of the community, we'd like to see more projects that we can support with promotion or even interviews (if the proposal is right). Sites like Kill Ten Rats, Talk Tyria, and GuildMag didn't get interviews with our devs by just sitting around waiting. They came to us with their ideas and their requests. They showed value in the content they created, they let us know about their creations on a constant and regular basis (via email, instant message, or Twitter), and when they made requests of us, there was an existing track record of those creations that we could look at which made supporting new requests for interviews easier because of that track record.

Funny thing is that several RPers contacted us after PAX because they were energized and excited after seeing our community panel. I spent a long time after the panel talking to a few role-players. They saw our answers on the panel as an opportunity, not an obstacle, so I can't wait to see what cool things they come up with.
    Further reading:

Here's a link that lists all the current RP features announced and some of the more-popularly requested ones, along with a discussion afterwards: Features Facilitating Roleplay in GW2

A fan blog post located here delves into the topic quite nicely beyond that and I highly recommend reading that too. Smart person.

While I'm a raider, through and through, and love challenging content when it comes to games, I can't enjoy it as much without a story. A lot of games that fall flat to me end up having a bland story. If a story is intentionally left out for the sake of gameplay, sure, that's one thing, but if it's got something in there and it's rarely called upon, then the point fades off for me. This was one reason I gave up on Rift a little while's into the game. It was a decent MMO, but the storyline was abyssmal. I could go into an area and know nothing about it, and then leave it, with all quests complete, and still have little clue to the point.

Point being, I hope some story holds up in GW2. The point they make in putting importance on the races during their allotted weeks gives good regard to the effort they're putting into it, and I look forward to expanding upon and developing my own characters, from haughty Asura Elementalists to corrupted Charr Necromancers.

That's the -exact- same way I feel. I've been following Guild Wars 2 for a little while now, and I can confidently say the thing that excites me most is the emphasis that the developers have been putting on consistent immersion, plot, and lore.

This, so much. I don't have much else to add but that I look forward to the storytelling and immersion GW2 hopefully will have to offer. I love RPG's for that reason, I love being engaged in a story and learn about the world and all.

I agree about the potential GW2 offers for good, immersing RP. I do believe plenty of RPers will find G2 interesting for that reason. And well, I hope for designated RP server because it would be cool if those that are interested would have somewhere to gather instead of getting spread out over several (and with that, the 'loling' from so-called regular players). If they don't make a RP server it might still be that one or two servers grow popular to RP on and there will be an opportunity to switch over there, but that could be quite irritating to have to go through.

From what things've been sounding like, server switching should be fast, fairly painless, and free. Can't source that at the moment, though. I think it's just popular speculation/good possibility until something's confirmed.

That's why I intend to keep my eye on forums (GW2Guru, MMO-C, etc.) as we get closer to launch. I'm sure that, should we find out that there won't be RP servers for GW2, a group of RPers will likely work towards making a decision as a community about which server we'll reside on. That being said, it'd be nice if RPers were common enough to exist on each server, but that's unlikely.

I've heard the same thing and while that may be true, it would still be sad haaving to switch server if you've just settled in somewhere only to find out the RP is happening somewhere else. For that reason I'd prefer to get right into a designated RP server or a server where I know plenty of other RPers will settle.

I hope for the very same thing and I'm guessing it might just happen. A somewhat hibernating community, but a community none the less where there might be discussions going on as we close in on the release is found here.

Never was much into RP, though I am an amazing writer(I accept the fact after many many people telling me to stop being emo about my work) but if they make it so that way there can never be something like Moon Guard, I went there with a friend once a few months ago.../shiver, then I think I could give it a try.

Guild Wars 2 seems to be an MMO that encourages people to try new things and be creative as a whole.

I played for 2 years in GW1 in RP guild and that was awesome. You don't really need RP servers for that (another WoW joke) just find a RP guild and have fun.

RP is what you make of it.

I personally don't make much of it.

Dynamic events are perfect for roleplaying! You just go explore the world and stumble upon a village being under attack. You team up with strangers to save the day! No longer do quests hold you back from saving the world

I know for a fact that I will move myself towards a Roleplaying community setting itself up somewhere once the game goes live.

As has been mentioned earlier in the thread, you don't really need to have an RP-specific server to roleplay. Just find a few friends to RP with, and enjoy that on your own. I personally enjoy RPing, but I've found that the RP experience in-game is often very limited. I will try to RP to some degree in GW2, though.

You ask for more? Then come, traveler, to the Whispering Deep, where only the mad walk.

    DUDE I LOVE YOU

Those words are like taken out of my mouth. I am a huge RP fan myself, can't stand people who doesn't take lore, names and the world seriously.
I am only naming my characters RP names, stuff that has something to do with the race. GW2 is my dream, I get an actual home, a world where I can RP in, fellow players who are Role players too and a personal story for my character.

Well, whatever server I end up on (not PvP), I'll be RPing as much as I can on all my characters. I've even begun to write down each one and slightly plan out their looks to match it.

Edit: Also, considering my main will be a Warrior, I might bring back my old D&D saying when I used maces- "AAAARGH! MACE TO FACE!"
