I think we can all agree that NATO and the UN doesn't do crap at least not without the US military taking the lead. I mean sure they do 'humanitarian' duties but sometimes you have to get dirty and savage but the prissy NATO and UN can be bothered to do such dirty work.

Canada isn't a very good comparison for population tbh. Over half is an unpopulated frozen wasteland.

The US defense budget is the almost the size of the German national budget if I'm reading the charts right.

We can easily afford such a defense budget and it allows countries like the EU and Canada to spend very little on their defense budgets. Small militaries mean reduced chances for war. It's like we're giving our allies free money. In return we get peace.

Do we have a comparison breakdown on what percentage of the US vs other countries military budget is for research? I mean, when my wife was getting her PhD she was working on a project to remove pharmaceutical waste from water because the newer drugs being developed don't get removed by standard wastewater treatment, which isn't exactly "military" but was actually being funded by the US government at a military research facility. They put a lot of money into things that wouldn't fit your classic definition of "military spending", and I'd be interested to see what the percentages out of the total spending are being used for.

Also does this account for the fact that the US supplies a lot of military hardware to other countries? Like we spend the money to build it, but then sell it. Is that money coming back being counted to offset expenditures?

Im A-OK with this. U.S. military provides a ton of jobs. There are chemical and biological research factories and they innovate a lot of things. Its not just soldiers and missiles.
