Hmmmm...
The plot thickens.
Could it be that NVidia have focused less on having one card support a billion displays (is actually 4) and more on actual performance? Just because a card can do 6 displays does not mean it should or that it is automatically better than a card that only supports 4.
Though as we know, the 7970 *does* have more VRAM, hopefully NVidia thought about that.
There are a lot of MLG players that use multi-monitor displays because it really gives them the professional edge, so I can see why this is really the cut throat point to be debated.

I want more 670 news! Would like to know the price, oh well I will wait for the release.
The supposition is that Nvidia dropped 25% die area that used to be for double-precision FP / compute, so the GTX 680 is more efficient for gaming than the 7970, but orders of magnitude worse than Tahiti, Fermi and even Pitcairn for compute.
For what it's worth, the Sapphire Toxic HD7970 have 6GiB, and I can definitely say that it's bordering on superfluous. :P Perhaps triple-screen, Crossfire HD7970 and BF3, but I doubt even that would come near it.
But yea, I've heard 2 and 4GiB versions for the GTX 680 as well, and it'd surprise me if no company would've made 2x the VRAM, as it's been pretty common the latest versions.
Someone managed to grab a SC of Newegg jumping the gun o the GTX 680. http://www.pcper.com/news/General-Te...g-GTX-680-leak

GTX 680 wins at lower resolutions by far...larger resolutions the gap basically drops to around 10%...or about the difference in clockspeeds. OC numbers need to come out IMO.

NewEgg SLI review:
So they are selling us the 660 as 680 and now they are going to do nothing all year and announce the real 680 as 780...
But maybe there are problems with the bigger chips and the decision is not only profit driven.

Will the reference cards be worth buying or should I wait for the aftermarket coolers? (I'm assuming these might take a while to come out the same way the 7970's did?)

The comparison with the 7970DCII is interesting.
