    Eyefinity restrictions

    Hey guys ---

Just rebuilt my computer after about 6 years (yay!) and everything's in production except the video card, which should be here tomorrow. I've got 3xDell ST2410 monitors (all up to 1920x1080). Now, I'm no math genius, and I'm new to Eyefinity/Surround, but 3x1920 should be 5760, so my eyefinity res should be 5760x1080. But I noticed that, on the XFX features/specs page for my card, it says the max Eyefinity resolution is 4096x3112. 4096<5760. Honestly, I can't even understand what kind of alignment of resolutions would get you 3112 tall.

If it matters at all, I'm planning on HDMI for the main monitor, DVI for a satellite, and HDMI -> Mini-DisplayPort for the last satellite.

You may need to use SLI/xfire (2 cards)

*facepalms* I forgot to mention it's in the sig. The card is an XFX Radeon HD 7970 black edition.

Pretty sure theres a limitation in that you are required to use Active DisplayPort for at least one display, but I'm no EyeFinity expert I'm afraid.

Does the "max res" show without the displays plugged in? Is your 7970 actually installed, or do you not have it yet?

The 7900 series cards should support a much higher resolution then just 5760*1080/1200.

The 5800 and 6900 series cards were already capable of getting that resolution, Eyefinity went into Generation 2 with the debut of the 7970 boasting a much higher resolution, XFX parked that resolution there because it's listing the max. res. of JUST the HDMI 1.4a connector, not actual max. res. supported.

Also the same spec page lists the Mini-DP as max res of just above DoubleHD (4096*2160), seeing as you have 2 of these connectors i'd go and get 2 active mini-DP-2-whatever connectors and the DVI, leaving the HDMI untouched (maybe a TV f.ex), would probably be a better idea.

That way Eyefinity should work without issue whilst leaving you with a more (at the moment) universal connector.

4096x3112 is for 6 panel setups or 1 large 24Hz panel, you should be good with 3 1080 monitors, just make sure one is displayport or you will need an active displayport adapter
