Non-profits are allowed to turn a profit. There isn't anything against it. What a non-profit cannot do is structure in a manner to maximize profit. Essentially, you can make money (as you have to pay the employees) but instead of a 10% markup, you just aim for like 2%.

Cause and effect. If I have cancer and go bankrupt and can't pay for it, when you then come in to get your physical, you just saw your bill went up. Why'd it go up, you might ask? Cause the hospital has to make up for the cost of treating my cancer.
