They generally do both because the letter is a code for a (relatively small) percentile range. Just a REALLY lazy way of telling your parents what you got. :/

But if people use letters only to rate something, I think that's pretty stupid because it doesn't give you a clear result and I don't understand some schools that use letters only.

Why not just use numbers or both numbers and letters? The way it's done in some schools just leaves the students confused and unclear about their scores.

In the UK, at least in some part, grades are shiftable. I remember most of our history class getting a shit grade on one of our exams at A-Level, apparently because everyone had done whatever relative to the whole country, they shifted the boundaries and shit, so we ended up with a lower grade in that exam .. stupid I know ...

Something to that effect anyway, I did shit in that exam because it was boring, American Civil War .. woo >.<

Not that it really matters, higher letter sounds better, especially if you were at the lowest point of that letter

I'd assume a good deal of it is statewide. Helps to keep things somewhat constant, you know.

We use both numbers and letters, though it's annoying that there isn't anything above an A seeing as some classes it becomes possible to have like, 300%. I got 212% in a computer class once, fairly certain that's the only reason that I don't have like, a 1.0 GPA.

My mom actually always closes because she always gets annoyed at me when I go close it the moment she leaves the room only to get back in again, so in return for me not to do that, she always closes it.
