It is apparently the hard cast mold of the snail from the movie. I would absolutely do something more ingame style like a shimmershell or something. Like Scooter:

I'm troubled by people in this thread having apparently never seen the Never Ending Story.

That being said, as a huge fan of Jim Henson movies I am all for a racing snail. Seriously folks... Never Ending Story, Dark Crystal, Labyrinth... classic!
