The Trails series is an ongoing saga spanning multiple games. It is divided into multiple arcs, which while they tie into the overarching narrative, ultimately tell their own, self contained story. Play whichever arc appeals to you the most.

Liberl Kingdom arc: Trails in the Sky: First Chapter -> Second Chapter -> The 3rd
Crossbell City arc: Zero no Kiseki (How to buy Zero, which is on sale right now for $13, how to apply fan translation) -> Ao no Kiseki*
Erebonian Empire arc: Trails of Cold Steel -> 2 -> 3 -> 4 (coming Spring 2021)



*You cannot legally buy Ao for PC. Well, there is a Chinese version you can buy, but it comes with malware. There is a safe version of Ao with the fan translation patch already applied out there on the internet, but for obvious reasons I can't link to it here.

CS4 is coming to PC in Spring.

Trails in the Sky: First Chapter for $10

Follow the happy-go-lucky young woman Estelle Bright, and her brother Joshua, as they become Bracers (the adventurers/witchers of this world) while searching for their father, and eventually discover a conspiracy that threatens the Kingdom of Liberl. This is the first of the TitS trilogy. This was the first game, and it's battle system is rough (I'd recommend playing on normal, as the other difficulties were patched in and the game wasn't designed around them)

Trails of Cold Steel for $24

This game follows the young man Rean Schwarzer, who leaves his home to attend a military academy in the Erebonian Empire, which is on the brink of a revolution. This is the first of the Cold Steel quadrilogy. This game has the most refined battle system. You can start on hard, if you want some challenge. I do not recommend playing on nightmare on your first time.
