    New Build, thoughts?

Decided to drop on building a laptop and work on upgrading my current desktop with newish and old parts. Replacing the older parts.

    What I want/need

    CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116899 - Intel i5-4670k
    MOBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128601 - Gigabyte GA-Z87MX
*I plan to OC the CPU*
    GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125475 - Gigabyte R9 280X
    RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820104173 - HyperX Kingston (2x4) 8GB DDR3 1600
    SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...40%20evo%20250 - Samsung 250gb EVO

Budget is anywhere between $800 and $1000. What is above equals $1000.

    What I have

Case- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129021 - Antec Nine Hundred
    PSU- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139009 - Corsair TX850W
    CPU Cooling- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...=corsair%20h50 - Corsair H50
    HDD- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136769 - WD Blue 500GB 7200
    * My current storage device. I plan to wipe it once I set up my SSD as the main drive*
    Some DVD drive
    Win 7 64-bit
    Monitor,mouse,keyboard,headset

I'm looking for feedback mostly if all of it looks compatible for OCing and is it a good gaming rig? 90% of it's use will be for game playing.

gigabyte makes a great mobo... but if your going to overclock id go with asrock extreme 4 or 6 much better for overclocking

you may want a better cooler like an H80i, dont bother with the H100i(it wont fit in your case anyways)

you may want to consider s bit better ram like 1866 speed but be sure to take note of the cache latency. something like:

What constitutes the 30 dollar price difference between the two? I'm not seeing a performance upgrade from the 6. Just added expansion slots and rear panel port options.

Huge plus is that the 4 is the same price as the gigabyte I was looking at.

6 gets you better voltage control(key to overclocking) dual LAN which can be nice for gaming and the board runs a bit cooler. Remember if the CPU is your heart then the mobo is your bones, blood, nerves, muscles, and half your organs.

there is a nice Tom's Hardware post about mobos in the $200+ range and they end up suggesting that the extreme 6 is right there with mobos that cost $240ish

Ok, going with the 6 then. Thanks. Not going to bother shelling out 100 bucks ( for now ) for a minor upgrade on the Corsair h50. Will replace RAM with the Corsair Vengeance.

I would get this GPU instead.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127759

Runs quieter and a bit lower temps.
    8700K (5GHz) - Z370 M5 - Mugen 5 - 16GB Tridentz 3200MHz - GTX 1070Ti Strix - NZXT S340E - Dell 24' 1440p (165Hz)

do you have any proof/testing for that? normally gigabytes windforce takes the cake when it comes to noise and temps... id be saddened to see them drop the ball.

I cant find a 280x roundup but anands 770 roundup is close with gigabyte being 4c cooler under furmark and its also the quietest at idle and under load:

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/7392/t...msi-compared/6

You cant go wrong either way really but in this case the gigabyte is a lil better.

Here is toms 760 review and the gigabyte is quieter and cooler here also:

I see the MSI running quieter but a tiny hotter.
My 7970 Windforce has a slight windcoil though, some people on newegg reports the same about the 280x.

ya i mean they will all be within a few percents of each other. but that tom's hardware review is why i bought the gigabyte gtx 760

btw, Ferris. Did you have to mess with your voltage to get to 4k Ghz? I'm going to assume 1.15-1.2 will be enough for 4k. According to several posts that I've read tonight, people aren't really needing to mess with their voltage for the 4670k though, making the extreme 6 not really necessary after all? Also because I have no plans to overclock the Corsair Vengeance RAM you suggested. I'll be overclocking the GPU as well, and going from stock 1.2v to 1.25 (maybe) doesn't seem very demanding on the MOBO's voltage regulator.

If you need 1.2v for 4.0GHz you have a very bad chip.
Large majority of the 4670's will hit 4.0GHz on stock .

I'd invest in a better CPU cooler. In that price range, you'd be better of with an air cooler.

Perhaps spend a little more for a h80i/h100i? You'll get much better temps when overclocking.

no i didnt need to change the voltage that's why i choose 4 Ghz, well that and with my cooler i still run at stock temps. but the better phase power on the extreme 6 isnt just to get better voltages but to also get more stable which if you want your stuff to last stable is key. this is the same reason you should have a UPS with AVR. often people in areas that have "old power" notice their electronics die quicker then others this can be due to old electrical infrastructure, AVR helps to balance the voltage going into your computer. yes i would still get the vengeance ram i would be like droping in a huge engine in your car and not adding new bigger exhaust to handle the load.

I think ive seen other reviews having much better temps, but still

    from: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/M...Gaming/30.html

I think I would skip this one and just get an Asus or gigabyte one.

From the majority of accounts I was reading, just about everyone was pushing 4Ghz without though voltage. Good to hear.

Thing is, I already own the H50, and it's not high on my list of high priority at the moment, but something I plan to purchase down the road in 4-5 months. The H50 should do the job for now.

If I can spend 30 bucks for a lot more stability, it's well worth it. I appreciate your feedback.

They had a defect sample, but point taken. Unreliable card to say the least.

So I get a free 4gb stick of RAM when I buy the Extreme 6 MOBO. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157295

And it's a good stick of RAM too. The G.Skill Ripjaw X Series. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...Tpk=20-231-720

I would save 53 dollars if I keep the one stick and buy another for $47. Just drop the Corsair Vengeance Pro?
