No, Thrall had no business in the Firelands story, at least not to the degree he did.
The quote below is taken from http://childrenofwrath.blogspot.com/...th-thrall.html Please take the time to read the full article because this one part doesn't do the issue justice.
Which brings us to the quest Elemental Bonds. One of the centerpieces of the 4.2 patch, Rage of the Firelands, this quest served as Staghelm's coming out party as an actual villain. Malfurion and the four Dragon Aspects unite to attempt to restore the World Tree. Five of Staghelm's most hated enemies, and Staghelm's hatred has brewed for millennia. Malfurion would go on to lead an assault into the heart of the Firelands, and eventually permanently destroys Ragnaros, Staghelm's new master. Not only does Staghelm hate Malfurion, but Malfurion is also a present threat to Staghelm's new employer. It's a two for one deal for vengeance, always a good move. So, with Staghelm's history, circumstance, and new found power, he crashes the ritual. His five most hated enemies, caught distracted and vulnerable. So what does he do? He attacks Thrall.
Yes thrall, sylvanas, anduinn and malfurion need to die so bad. They are so annoying!
Initially yes but i assume they put thrall in as a good portion of the horde player base have no idea who Hammul is.
Which is quite sad really that people can play a game for years and still not get into the storyline.
I dont know how people can say they play an rpg and not be interested in the story.
Just on the Thrall aspect, I think it was a poor decision to try and make him neutral. They should have had Thrall and Malfurion working together since they are the respective "top power" of either faction (most powerful druid/shaman, etc, etc), plus both have ties to their class' respective neutral faction, and have them sort of putting aside faction differences to work towards a common goal.
Claiming Thrall is neutral is sort of like saying Mickey Mouse is no longer a Disney character for a year. Nobody is going to buy that, they'll still know Mickey Mouse *IS* Disney's mascot. Thrall has always been the Horde's representative character for all marketing materials.
