    Angry Why most MMORPG flop.

i've thought about this for a long time, and please let me explain my theory on why new MMORPG's Flop.

the answer is simple for me -> Crossrealm Battlegrounds & Dungeons.

    why is that?

well... Imagine starting a complete new game and you have no friends.
you do some quests which (most people find boring, if you're all alone)
but once you hit that limit, may it be 15 or 20... to start doing Battlegrounds or Dungeons, you then finally start seeing other people
but the problem is; you'll never see them again, and you don't have a "blizzard battle tag" to add them to your friendlist unfortunately.
few weeks later, still no friends, well... ONE if you're lucky. but he's soon gone because he feel just the same like you do.

why does this suck? well... people can't get friends, people can't chat and have fun, play together with the little "gang" that we used to have in World of Warcraft back in the days right? i remember having a full friendlist on MY REALM ONLY... that were the days, i could always ask my friends if they wanted to come to a dungeon or if they wanted to help me farm... because we were friends right?

for me, and many of my friends... the community, chatting with random people in Orgrimmar and not just in your guild was very important factor for a game like World of Warcraft, we needed that chatting and having fun, knowing everyone on your own realm.

today i can't even name 1 player on my realm unfortunately.

now you ask; but World of Warcraft have 5,5 subscribers but they have crossrealm?

well yes, in some cases, people in world of warcraft actually have a friendlist with BATTLE TAGS and their friends can go to other realms without being lost, this is the key thing that doesn't apply for ANY OTHER MMORPG that i've played.

i quit guildwars, i quit wildstar, i quit SWTOR, i quit Tera, Rift... god i quit almost ALL NEW MMORPGS for one reason: it felt empty, i had no friends, and once i found someone i liked, we couldn't talk again EVER when we left the BG/Dungeon.

the community is fucked up as it is today... why? well first things first.

    1. People don't have friends, so they just queue to whatever they wanna do, BG or Dungeon or a Raid...
    2. those people won't ever help you because they've turned into selfish arrogant bastards that don't care about friends they just wanna "play for a while and do what they feel is neccesary" they will never need your help to a dungeon anyways because they can find other teammates in 1 minute using the dungeon tool.
    3. Even my irl friends don't give a crap about me and say "i'm very busy" and when i check the friendlist they're in a battleground, like that can't wait? LOL.

anyways... i just wanted to share this information and ask you guys what you think?
is the crossrealm a very BAD THING for a NEW GAME?

    thanks in advance

That's why they created guilds and organized PVP/raiding, which empowers the team spirit.

But facebook players will complain that guilds = commitment and they don't have time for this.

Your logic is flawed as SWTOR doesn't even have Crossrealm Queues

    Friendship is magic, or what?

Some people just way too overemphasize the importance of "the social aspect". I never wanted to fucking talk to people in the game all the time and be in a "gang". This whole herd building thing puts me off. It's not as if players were all that much interesting as people. There's always this silly reproachful vibe coming from these threads, as if it was somehow immoral or a sin if you don't strive to constantly have as much daily personal contact with others and depend on them as much as possible. Way pushy and intrusive.

They flop cause theyre samey and boring and need huge time investment to be fun.. and also that most so far have copied WoW. Why play an unpolished copy and waste time on it as it's probably gonna flop anyway when you can just play WoW.

Another reason is that every other MMO Ive tried is just boring. You rummage around and do these mindnumbingly easy kill x quests or stupid events and every time I tried, after an hour or 2, I realized it was really boring and I didn't feel like having to chew that because the game might be fun at higher level was justified.

But most mmo's don't flop. So erm what?

Edit in case people like to nitpick : There are a ton of very small browser based ( for the most part) mmorpgs that appear and die soon after , but most people haven;t heard of them so I assume this discussion ignores them and talks about the more high profile mmos.

Just because you're anti-social doesn't mean that other people don't like being in guilds and doing raiding/pvp/quests/whatever together. :| Newsflash: you don't have to be in a guild or talk to anyone ever...but then why are you playing an MMO?

You do know that you can simply make friends on your server, right? You can talk in chat channels, meet people in towns, join a circle or guild, etc. Dungeons and battlegrounds aren't made for socializing. Although you could, of course, use them as such, they are not the only nor the best way to make friends.

Besides, many people (I would dare say most) play because of the gameplay, not because of making possible friends. They use Facebook and stuff for that.

    doesn't bother me at all.

I'm not "most", don't generalize to suit your theory. I simply adore going alone and do quests. Altoholism at its best. Anyway - I prefer doing quests alone due to ability to do them as *I* please, as fast/long as *I* desire. Especially those which require to get X-amount of Y at Z% drop rate (where Z < 20). Many times I farmed some mobs just to get last piece where all my group had already finished and were discussing disbanding since I was holding them.

Nope. Lvl 15-20 is within reach of a single evening. No rush. If you can't spend a single evening without speaking to anyone it means you may have a personal problem. Also - after I get to lvl 15-20 I simply continue leveling in the world doing quests. No other people needed.

Thanks the light for that. (fixed that for you).

    Amen.
In the long run it turns that they play at different times, are offline when I am up. If they happen to be while I am - they usually do stuff I don't (like PvP or pet battles) or aren't interested in helping me as they already are 5 lvls above and CBA going back. In the end I'm left with a list of people I stopped talking with months ago. Having list full o'people just to have it - thanks, but no.

Does it? Maybe for you. Seems like some can't imagine not everyone needs other to have fun.

Most of the time it can't, actually. Not only do you get Deserter but it's a dick move to abandon your team in the middle of a game (even though you might get replaced by someone else in just a few minutes).

Most of those didn't have cross server BG/Dungeons at launch and some still don't. That is partially why some of them came out of the gate limping.

I agree with this. Never made random friends when I started in Burning Crusade. And while I have a rather big friends list now throught battle-tag, it's not like we're terribly talkative anyway. And it's good that you're not forced to socially interact. During rated PvP and raids, sure, but not when you're levling your 42nd alt through some low level zone

MMOs are not social platform as it was before. Now people are overwhelmed with "social interaction" everywhere on the internet. There is forum everywhere...likes, comments, sharing...etc. Today MMOs are just normal video games with forced multiplayer. That it. It's fun to play with people..but socialising ? People don't have time or mood for that.. They just want play.

So why are other MMORPGs not so successful than WoW? Because there is not enough content...also there are just too many high profile games. People are just picky and easily burned out.

Well I can tell you one thing: certainly not to be friends with you or have a guy like you bleating in my ear or spamming my chat every evening. Makes sense, right?

  16. #16
OP take a look in the mirror. The problem is not new MMOs. It's you. I have played all the MMOs you mentioned and every single one I make a group of friends that I still talk to. I got these friends because I talk to people. General chat, group chat in PuGs, guilds and etc. A MMO does not fail because you can not make friends....MMOs die down quickly because their new "shine" becomes dull quickly because most of the time, it's nothing new. Same shit different skin.

  17. #17
Most don't flop. Look how many have been released, and now look at how many have actually shut down their servers.

Unless we're talking the typical forum hyperbole "this game is dead because I'm not playing it"... then that's a different, and pointless, discussion.

The reason most MMORPG's flop is because they try too hard on being different that they forget the important things.
FOMO: "Fear Of Missing Out", also commonly known as people with a mental issue of managing time and activities, many expecting others to fit into their schedule so they don't miss out on things to come. If FOMO becomes a problem for you, do seek help, it can be a very unhealthy lifestyle..

I believe the amount of MMO's out there will almost flop any new MMO's. When I started with MMO's there were maybe 300-500k players playing Ultima Online, Asherons Call, and EverQuest. When WoW became big there were perhaps only a handful of MMO's fishing in the playerpool of like 5-10 million. WoW won that fishing competition and then the whole genre exploded, because all wanted that piece of the WoW cake. MMO came after MMO, and yes the playerbase grew. But now I believe it's at standstill or even declining. Other genre's have taken over, FPS (CS:GO), Moba's, Hack and slash, Heartstone, Minecraft etc etc..

I'd say the reason many MMOs fail is because lack of polish and quality. They don't feel right..control input, responsiveness, sound, etc.
