Yeah, if we can't get to them, what threat would we be to them?

But yeah, I suppose some of the projectiles are somewhat weighty, and most likely made out of something like tungsten or some other hard stuff like that.

In any case, damage typically consists of mass and speed. Increasing mass is sort of a problem, because that usually means larger projectiles, and you'll have to lug around more and more weight. Increasing the speed of the projectile is much more logical, and that's where railguns come in.
One would assume depleted uranium would be the metal for this very reason.

We land an army on your shores within a week or so of hostilities and then you stop being a threat....

Well, tungsten is denser, and DU has a bit of a radioactivity issue. I think some game had mass drivers in orbit that fired tungsten rods.

Of course, that's mass drivers, but I'd assume tungsten would work for railguns as well. Not sure which one would work better with magnets, though, and whether the projectile would have to have a sabot of some sort.

    Tungsten is allot more expensive.

Tell that to France and the families of the dead in San Bernardino.
It's "should have" and "could have." When a native English speaker uses of in place of have, he or she looks ignorant.

That's the official expenditure numbers on Iran, Saudi Arabia, Russia and China... Get real, they are all enemies of the West and their real expenditure is much higher.

I'm almost positive I corrected you on this quote mine in another thread, but it's so popular it very well may have been somebody else. Adding in just a few more words gives that sentence a very different meaning. Leaving them out is tantamount to lying through someone else's mouth.

Mall Security you realize you don't have to use the word "fuck" or some variation of it in every single post you make right?

On topic I think a lot of people are overlooking the research/benefits the military brings, and the humanitarian relief efforts it has been a part of. I would not mind cutting back our expenses abroad slowly while letting other nations pick up some of the slack. That isn't to say a total removal of power and neuter our military, just cut it back some and let others have a chance so if they are invaded they can actually defend themselves long enough for us to make it over.

Indeed bro. Then they created the whole mess in Iraq after invading under false pretenses.

You don't need to resort to conspiracy theories to make a similar point: US capabilities aren't as far ahead of rivals as the pure expenditure numbers would make it appear, because 1) many things (like wages for labor) cost more in the US, and 2) we waste a ton of it, both accidentally (due to things like broken OODA loops and inefficient bureaucracies) and deliberately in ways that are profitable for contractors, but very inefficient (if not useless) in terms of military utility per dollar (like the LCS and F-35).

That said, even if you accept that current US military strategic goals are valid (something I don't, insofar as we even have them), we still spend far, far more than we need to because of our broken systems (something that's not exclusive to the military).
"In today’s America, conservatives who actually want to conserve are as rare as liberals who actually want to liberate. The once-significant language of an earlier era has had the meaning sucked right out of it, the better to serve as camouflage for a kleptocratic feeding frenzy in which both establishment parties participate with equal abandon" (Taking a break from the criminal, incompetent liars at the NSA, to bring you the above political observation, from The Archdruid Report.)
