Google Translate has used AI to improve 12 languages, is it any good?

I know we have some native speakers of different languages here and I was wondering if they could look at the google translated from English text and see if it's an improvement on the old Google Translate which would just translate word by word and lose most of the meaning?

I guess they've only had the AI work on English and French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Turkish.

    =====

    The French part is understandable.

I have been using google translate for a while now to speak to overseas vendors in Chinese and Czech it doesn't get everything but people understand what you are trying to say and it has gotten better overtime.

    Some parts are understandable,but others......

    Like this part:
    "De busqueda peinaron cuidadosamente"
    Wtf?
    Or:
    "Lavado en tierras"
I assume it translated from washed up or something similar, but it doesnt make sense in spanish.
Also "pero mientras" seems unnecessary. "Aunque los escombros" or "A pesar de la ubicacion de los escombros" are better options.

The French makes sense. The Korean has always been pretty garbage, though it looks like it's improved a little bit. "Search Box" instead of "Search Zone" and things like that.

The Portuguese is readable, especially if you're familiar with English and can self-correct the obviously literal translations (combed, washed ashore). There are also problems with grammar and sentence structure.
It is still clearly a machine translation. Turing test FAILED.

Here is the reverse translation of the Portuguese if you're interested, obvious errors are bolded:

    -----

For years, search teams carefully combed the search area on several ships, in large part setting their hopes on towfish, small ships equipped with sonar that sent information back to the ships in real time. The ships slowly dragged the fish through the ocean just above the bottom of the sea, hoping that the equipment would detect some trace of the airplane. Unmanned submarines were used to examine areas of more irregular terrain and objects of interest caught by the sonar that demanded a closer look.

The search zone changed several times like investigators refined their analysis, all in vain. Some began to question if the airplane had crashed in the Southern Hemisphere.

Then, in July 2015, came the first proof that the plan was really in the Indian Ocean: a sliver of the wing of the airplane was found on Reunion Island, east of Madagascar. Since then, more than 20 confirmed objects or believed to be from the airplane washed on land on beaches across the Indian Ocean. But while the wreckage proved the airplane fell on the Indian Ocean, the location of the primary underwater wreckage - and its crucial data recorders of the black box - remains stubbornly indescribable.

If the airplane is never found, the reasons for its disappearance and accident will probably never be known, although Malaysia has said that the airplane's erratic movements after take-off were consistent with deliberate actions.

Its understandable for the most part but it has many mistakes.

"der erste Beweis" is actually right. .

    Understandable? Yes.
But still has a lot of grammar mistakes.

Its kind of weird for portuguese... We don't even use the verb ''pentear'' under this kind of context. Another problem, just for me, is that it uses the brasilian portuguese standart, and i'm a native european portuguese speaker.

But, if we exclude some syntax inacuracies, its quiet understandable.

EDIT: Freaking auto-correct tunned to portuguese .

Google said they let their AI run around on the net in those countries and learn the same way a human would learn, by practicing with native speakers.

Did the native speakers know they were talking to an AI?

This obviously means that Google Translate bot is among us. We should check which users' English has gotten better in the last months and then we'll know who is the bot!
