He backed off after all the blowback.
He was not ashamed of his hare-brained idea:
"Every classroom has been equipped with a five-gallon bucket of river stone," Mr Helsel said at the state's House Education Committee on 15 March.
"If an armed intruder attempts to gain entrance into any of our classrooms, they will face a classroom full of students armed with rocks and they will be stoned.
"We have some people who have some pretty good arms. They can chuck some rocks pretty fast."
Brought some stones to a gunfight...
Not so famous last words written on a tombstone.
I could put down a gunman pretty easily if I had the right rock.
I'd also much rather have a box of rocks than a box of nothing.
"I'm not stuck in the trench, I'm maintaining my rating."
so when students hear gunshots coming down the hallway they can simply arm themselves with these rocks then throw the rocks at the shooters gun knocking it out of his hand, then the teacher can arrest the shooting student and class can resume as normal once police have arrived and taken the shooter into custody, its genius really.
I saw this a while ago and I gotta say I think its better then a whole lot of the other ideas I've seen.
Don't underestimate what 25 15-18 year olds can do with a bucket of river rocks.
Frankly Its probably just about equally as effective as a 'resource officer'. The shooter is gonna shoot at least a couple people either way, we've seen that, this way puts the power, to a limited degree, in the hands of the kids to defend themselves.
I mean remember folks... people get killed by stoning...literally just like this...a group of people flinging rocks.
In addition...one person with a rock isn't going to do much...it takes the group..so one kid getting pissed and grabbing a rock isn't going to threaten the entire school the way one kid grabbing a teachers gun would.
How does that work?
Teacher: Rock Check
Jonny: Here
Molly: Here
Bob: I left mine at home
Teacher: I'm giving you an F for the day
Or is it more teacher has a box of rocks at the class door and if a gunman comes the teacher hands students rocks and goes "go go go" patting them on the back as they walk out to...throw themselves at and try to stone the gunman?
Nothing says safe like giving stoning rocks to hormonal angsty teenagers
Only the guy without sin may cast the first stone. So I can certainly see the problems with this plan.
Thats what we need, we need 1 MLB pitcher in every school with a bag of perfect rocks....
Now that I think about it, our military industrial complex would just come out with tactical, kevlar coated, special forces rocks that would end up costing 10,000$ a rock and we would OF COURSE have to have them in every classroom and police car.
Better than paperclips, I suppose.
When I was in high school we had security guards at the entrances and they would patrol the hallways during class times. Before you could even enter the school properly there was a metal detector and two lines (one men & one female) through when a pat down.
I was in school in the late 80s and early 90s. How is it some schools are less secure in 2018?
Even the elementary school my children goto has security guards at the doors in the hallways. These are kids under 12.
The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a rock. Just ask Goliath, he'll tell you, he had guns.

Alright, alright... why don't we just compromise? We put buckets of guns in each classroom to throw at school shooters.
There, are we all happy now?
