    Soviet... erm, Russian elections

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...s-putins-power

The Communist wunderkind Valentin Konovalov should already be Siberia’s youngest governor, but the elections he’s supposed to win are cancelled every other week.

The virtually unknown 30-year-old rode a wave of protest to win a first-round ballot in Khakassia, a republic in eastern Siberia, last month. The results were an embarrassment for the ruling United Russia party and the Kremlin, which backed the incumbent. But his opponents have found an easy way to keep him from winning the run-off: don’t hold it.
So, where are our Putinistas? Explain how Russia has anything to do with democracy? This is a joke.

How dare you say something like that. It says right in the article it was because of a problem with the paperwork.
Besides the West does paperwork also!

Russia has "elections" for the same reason that Republicans had "investigation" done on the Kavanaugh allegations; So they can screech how it was totally done and is legit. A talking point, despite being complete sham. Nothing more.

If he genuinely misfiled the paperwork but won the election then it seems pretty silly to disqualify him rather than allow it to be amended.

Having said that, a resurgence of the Communist party is not a good thing for Europe.

Well, something needs to change over there. Not too thrilled about the Communist Party myself, but the bigger worry is the quasi dictatorship of the current party. It's ridiculous how they slip from one dictatorship to another and think that's the normal state of running a country.

Not to detract from this as it is completely screwed up and unfortunately this guy will fall victim to food poisoning or something similar before too long.

I can't help but think of the events happening locally in the US.

    1) We have Georgia where Republicans purged like 800,000 voters from the rolls while blocking 53,000 voters from registering.
    2) We have North Dakota where Republicans are trying to block Native Americans from voting if they live in the Reservations.
    3) We have North Carolina where Republicans drew massively gerrymandered districts that were ruled illegal only to redraw them illegally again but allowed to keep them this time claiming they didn't have enough time to redraw them again instead of forcing them onto the older districts pre-2010 to get around it or offer them to ultimatum that either they draw them right or their opponent gets to draw them instead. Who also previously tried using voter ID laws while being caught looking for which IDs minorities were more likely to lack to surgically disenfranchise them and who tried to strip the incoming governor of power when the Republican lost.

All this while we have a president who lost the vote by will of the people a Supreme Court Justice from a stolen seat and a new Supreme Court Justice who committed perjury multiple times on live TV who is also a potential rapist whom the Republicans blocked looking into and got seated anyways.

As fucked up as Russia is, we have an entire party who seems to be trying to mimic them in some respects.

They cannot even disqualify him by law; the window for disqualification on this technicality is 10 days from filing paperwork, which is long past.

It is certain to be overruled on appeal - if it ever comes that far.

Socialist and communist goverment will never allow fair election, thats how it works in "facist" countries.

If it wouldn't be democracy he wouldn't manage to get to second round, wouldn't he?

In several elections at once "ruling" party Candidates faced defeat.

Sure, local authorities are trying to thwart this sudden upset; they'll probably get overruled in the end and this Communist will probably win.

Yes. Yes. Tell us more about how there are no Russian troops in Ukraine and how these guys were on holidays.

What, do you mean people don't usually go on holiday into other countries? With military gear and automatic weapons

There was fraud, it was exposed, results of voting are likely to be preserved in the end.

Moscow needs experience dealing with failure and understanding limits of their influence on periphery.

Wait, is this an extension of the two GRU officers that tried to poison that guy being holiday? Are we implying the Russian army is also gay? I'm on board with that, I just need to know if that's the implication before moving forwards.

I'd link Slepakov's "banned" clip "Шпили-вили" to support this joke (from kind of Russian "Saturday Night Live" media person) but wordplay and satire there are hard to translate well, plus it probably counts as explicit content...

Those were there from naval base that was allowed to be there. Way before maidan. Or do you suggest Putin teleported a naval base unto Crimea? I knew he had skills, but this...
