Is western society becoming too decadent and perverse?

I think so. Everything seems to be about cashing your inner lust all the time, being as perverse as possible. Just liking vanilla sex is not enough, nowadays you have to like fucking someone dressed as a peacock while you sing Kumbaya in front of a group of kindergarden children to be considered "normal". Become your inner animal, the biggest horndog wins!

It also shows in the way we dress, where it becomes more and more sexual. I went to a normal rock bar I visit a lot last weekend, and I saw 2 girls with leashes and gagballs running around. You never saw that at that particular place 10-12 years ago.

Ffs, companies started to create clothes and such with sexual innuendos for CHILDREN.

Pop music is more and more about sex and short-term lust. Same for movies and video games which push the boundaries for sex scenes more and more.

It's not that sex is a bad thing, but you CAN have too much cake in my opinion.

It's not just about sex though. Old traditions are being exchanged for the next drinking binge, smoke of pot and similar.

Mental health issues are also on the rise.

I honestly don't like the direction western society is taking. Is it because of lack of religion in people's lifes they feel like they lack meaning in life, so they give into lust? It's a fact that religion is not just about believing in space daddy. It also gives meaning to a lot of people and a sense of community with shared morals and belonging. I'm not calling for a 100% return of how society was back then, but they did some things right back then, in creating meaning in people's lifes.

There is so much more to life than chasing your inner lust, yet that is exactly what the majority of western people aimlessly live for.

Are you perhaps projecting something here?

Of course I am a product of my time, I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't. I'm not as extreme as many people, but sadly I do like porn, I do like drinking, I do like partying and I do like suggestive sexual material. Doesn't mean I'm not aware of my surroundings though, nor that I would prefer stuff to stay this way.

    Probably.

I'd rather have the option to engage in said behavior and decline, then to not have the option though.

Empires fall. It's what they always have done and always will do. The will of millions eventually outweighs the resources of a few hundred. That's just nature taking it's course. Our empire will fall soon. I can't wait.

I mean, it depends...really what we have is a society that glorifies any type of living that involves people spending more of their money. Could be in relationship to food, sex, cars, homes, whatever.

For as long as humans could think, sex has been on our minds. It's not a new thing.

You can look at primitive "Venus" statues that have exaggerated features to stories about how Zeus would turn into animals to have sex with women or "One Thousand and One Nights." Depravity has always been a thing.

Me either, although I don't think that going back to organized religion is the best solution either. You can create your own meaning in life in a lot of ways, some people need to learn for themselves what gives their lives meaning and what doesn't.

    Humans have always been perverted.

It's coming. We have pushed people too far, that's why we have mass shootings and a notable prevalence of mental health issues.

Nah I don't think society is perverse. Even though there is more sexual fetishes than ever I think people will eventually get bored of them after a while and move on to more meaningful hobbies.

Actually, that is a great example as all former great civilisations that became too decadent, lazy and perverse started to crumble. Rome and Greece are great examples of precisely that.

no, the more perverse the better.

i am worried about the rise of authoritarianism in the west though.

Individual stupidity and ignorance are at the heart of most issues. People should stop and dwell on that when they're about to post another "my subjective view on why the world is going down the tubes; current generation edition. New look, same product your parents, and their parents, ∞, have used (said) when they reached middle age-ish."

They were also great examples of philosophical advancements. And if you look at western civilization when it was at it's most conservative....

    in a way.

but i'm ultimately not really serious on it.

i know my ideas aren't actually really possible irl. see, what i want, is to have a government that functions to only keep people safe, happy, and healthy. the country pretty much being a playground for the citizenry.

i'd need to be a god to make such a country though, so i recognize that will never happen.

the authoritarianism i'm worried about is very real, and has been enacted in many countries over the years.
