As much as Alexander is a piece of shit, I'd be fine with this bill if the federal government footed the bill. And it should for something like this at this point.

And then we should work on legislation to make paid sick leave mandatory for all companies.
Don't most European, Latin American, a few African and a few Asian countries have legal requirements for paid sick leave? How is this not a thing in America?

Don't get me wrong, fuck corporations that don't offer this kind of shit. But for a LOT of small businesses, especially with their books looking like hot garbage due to decreased business recently, this isn't sustainable.

It's not about "NeOLIBeraLs", it's about realizing that this is a terrible short-term solution that would fuck over small businesses while not impacting major corporations (the actual problem). We need longer term solutions to make emergency legislation like this unnecessary.
So make big corporations foot the bill while smaller ones get help from the government. That simple.

The invisible hand of the free market? Honestly, fuck the economy as this situation won't end well for many people. If it isn't the coronavirus or the greedy corporations then it'll be automation that'll destroy jobs.

Because American laws are still largely dictated by corporate interests.

Why the fuck does everything think that the government can just do whatever the fuck they want? They can't do this dude, that's now how our laws fucking work.

Arm chair socialism sees the rich and government forces as wizards who jealousy hoard all the wealth from unsuccessful people due to their desire to see them suffer.

You not going to get reasonable expectations from them on what the government can and cannot do.

This bullshit of tax credits won't help many IC's.

It's really Ron Paul voters from 2015 come to haunt us ... forever!

Or is just hipster projection? Romanticizing small businesses as craft brewers, and bespoke guillotine makers?
A bill like this that hit small businesses without warning due to a pathogenic crisis is not ethical IMO. If/when we start passing bills that mandate sick leave, livable wages, etc. it will be in an environment where the business can prepare for such changes. Telling a Mom-n-Pop store that they are to provide 14 day sick pay now for all employees will come at too much of a shock in a terrible moment.

Again, I am not against the idea of having the paid leave mandatory but it has to be implemented at a normal time in a normal procedure. This bill was apparently rushed and I am actually glad it was shot down. The bill isn't a valid answer to those missing work due to Covid-19, the relief should come from the government.

Passing bills like this are anything but simple. People missing work atm with no pay will need some financial security ASAP and funding package will be a more immediate answer than stipulating which companies pay for what.

I got to say out of this whole thing going on right now the one institution I am 100% unsatisfied with is the Senate. Say what you will about the House politically one way or the other but when this thing hit they were quickly passing bills and negotiating with the WH to get things done. The WH while having a doof at the top at least has a few elements within the ranks working to get things done despite the doof getting in the way. The Senate seems more interested in getting to vacation or making a long weekend of it. Mitch McConnell has to be one of the worse leaders the Senate has ever had. He takes action on nothing. He thinks for himself on nothing. All he does is wait for a thumbs up or down from the President. I mean that is all he does. Period. What a waste of space and a waste of a government institution.

Turns out the bill is a huge pile of shit.

So many loopholes and wavers some reports are less than 20% of workers will even be qualified and most major corps can be excluded, anyone under 50 employees can get a waver and part time/independent contract/gig economy are all left out.

Nothing like leaving out the highest customer contact volume industries and workers from a bill that is supposed to slow the spread of the virus.

We're tracking w/ Italy, but a few days behind. And we can't know if this is correct due to testing. This isn't a time to draw out negotiations w/ an intractable GOP. You get what you can get and then you ask for more. Day by day.

Any buyers remorse for the people that gave Lamar! the benefit of the doubt?

Not only did the GOP gut a lot of the language, they tried to remove previous sick-leave protections.

Methinks you don't know what "antifa" means. That's like a Jew loving Nazi or a KKK loving Black Panther. You can't be anti-fascist and love fascism.
