You'd think that Libel/Slander could protect some of this. I guess the main problem would be proving that it did any actual damage since the main yahoos that throw it around wouldn't have voted for him anyways.

I think you are probably right. The point being that all the things we like to think are new actually aren't. America survived that (Sort of, it sort of locked us into a really dark path for a century or more), we will survive this too. 1876 is probably a lot worse then 2020 will be. And yet, we have pretty much completely forgotten 1876, and forgotten Hayes, and forgotten Tilden. We will forget Trump too, because America always forgets its ugliness and unpleasantness. We only like to remember the cool, uplifting parts of history.

To really drive this point home, I never learned about that election in school. Never knew any details of it beyond "Hayes won the EC but lost the popular vote." Hell, I never even learned about the scope and openness of the violence committed by the KKK and other groups in that era, or the large number of black men elected to office in the South following the Civil War. In fact, I'd go so far as to say I learned virtually nothing about Reconstruction in school beyond "it happened," and I grew up in Oakland, California. I learned about all of that only in the last couple of years, from reading Ron Chernow's biography of Ulysses S. Grant (which, incidentally, I absolutely recommend; it's very long, but interesting and informative).

Those laws are typically designed to protect private persons from unwarranted attack. Because Biden/Trump have purposefully put themselves in to the public eye, they are largely barred from suing for Libel or Slander. Which of course ends up benefiting the party of law and order....

When you think about race distribution in swing states like Michigan for example, and you break down national polls by race, yeah they kinda do, unfortunately. This poll does not look good.
