Is the story questing too linear?

So I've begun questing in Bastion and I like it so far. My question is the story line completely linear? Do we need go through each zone in a specific order? Do we need to do the exact same linear quest line on every alt? I thought we would get to choose which quest in, like in BFA and Legion.

The first play through will be linear. After that, you can take your alts through in any order.

You thought wrong, as they announced waaaay in advance that the first character would be "forced" through the various zones in a specific order. At the same time they announced that any character after that would get to pick and choose. So if you read the last bit, you just ignored the first.

Yeah, this is probably the most linear it’s ever been. So much so that they haven’t even bothered populating the areas ‘off-piste’ with any actual mobs. The world is pretty empty.

I like that for the first toon, we're being forced through the path the story-tellers actually wrote the story to be.
Glad we can go any direction after, however.

The rails are pretty damn obvious this time around yeah, even if it in service to a more coherent overarching story than in any previous expansion.

Being able to skip it all on alts, however, is such a godsend that I'll happily take the trade.

No, alts have access to the "Threads of fate" once they finish the Maw introduction. They will directly choose their covenant, unlock the worldquests and can level in whatever zone they want without following the campaign (campaign quests are completely unavailable tho, you only have the HUB quest but you also have a "zone progress" bar giving you lot of XP).
They can also choose to redo the linar campaign leveling. Switching to the Thread of fate can be done whenever you want, but that's a definitive choice.

It's been fairly linear since TBC if you really think about it. After the initial zone which some had options of starting and some expansions didn't you followed a linear leveling path as zones were ordered by levels. You couldn't go to Shadowmoon Valley after you finished Hellfire for example. You feel like you had more choice than you did as some zones had ideal levels that overlapped with another zone so you could move on before you finished the zones quests.

It's only linear in this game so far as you have to finish the story quests to move on to the next zone and you didn't previously. You could move on even if you were under leveled and couldn't access the quests or kill anything.

I don't mind this change really.

The lead designer for this expansion is self-center.

Just look at "No Mount in Maw", and no teleport after daily.
I plan to play as little as possible this expansion.

That's easily done. Cancel your sub.
