Shiny rock that doesn't generate wealth or give compounding dividends? Wow. So desirable. Tomorrow some silver mining company in Africa can just decide to offload a bunch of silver they had hidden and then silver market crashes.

The point is that they have actual real-world uses, that are not about simply generating wealth... but being part of physical (often industrial) products. Now, I'm not a fan of investing in them, because of their periodic volatility... but ignoring their actual uses seems foolish.

Generating wealth would be a business and business is the best investment. However that doesn't mean you should put 100% of your net worth into businesses.

The reasons for investing in metals rarely have anything to do with hoarding them so you can use them to make circuit boards or jewelry.

Okay if you're not hoarding then I wouldn't buy metals right now. Metals is a weird place to try to make a quick buck.

I'm optimistic about about real estate and the stock market but I still don't see why I would put all of my eggs in one basket.

Maybe you're right, I don't know. I got my Silver Eagles a while back. When it comes to metals I don't really care about the exact value, I just care about whether it will remain desirable in the future and useful in industry.
