I have two Devolo dLan 550 duo+ powerline adapters. I always thought you needed to use both for this to work, but I just tested with only one, and it works fine. How is this possible, or am I misinformed? or will my speed be lower?

That particular unit looks like it has wifi capability, so you can have just one.
If it doesn't have wifi (and many dont), you need two. One to connect from the router to the power grid, and then another in another room to go from power grid to computer/switch.
