My favourite genres:
Regular, slightly bluesy metal: It's the original, best genre. Nothing over or below, it's just metal!
Nu metal: It's fusing rap/hiphop-elements with downtuned f***ing heavy riffs and some scream/growl. New, yet fucking badass.
Metalcore: Screamt/growled verse and clean chorus with melodic/ton-heavy riffings and insane drumming, sometimes incorporating blast-beats... Win.
Trash-metal: Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Kreator... The classic "hardcore"-genre. It's just raw, man.
Groove metal: It cannot be described without mentioning at least 1 distortion pedal and Dimebag Darrell! Think trash-metal, just alittle bit heavier, and much more grooved in a "jazzy" way, if you can say it like that.
Best bands (in my opinion) within the genres:
Reg. Metal: Black Label Society (Not the best overall, but compared to everything post 80's, they are the KINGS!)
Nu metal: KoRn (Inventors of the genre also!)
Metalcore: Killswitch engage (Very melodic, original at most)
Trash metal: Slayer (Playing with dolls have never been this cool! lol)
Groove metal: Pantera (Respect, walk. This is groove metal art!)
Syobon action-cat for secret last boss in WotLK!
metal sucks with few exeptions as Yoshimoto said. I like some songs by Taproot and few other bands :

# Groove metal - ok, iffy but ok.lol sorry but you ask "best type of metal music" and then only name metal + 2 sub genres?

# Neo-classical metal - A sub-genre of progressive metal.
# Stoner metal - ok, though personally I don't know the difference between stoner and sludge.
# Alternative metal - Ok, so what is this? Give some examples.
# Christian metal - This is not a genre of music.
# Extreme metal - Too vague a term, and applies for most sub-genres of metal.
# Rap metal - Could have sworn this was nu metal, unless it's a sub-genre of nu metal?
# Viking metal - This is a sub-genre of folk metal.
# Pirate Metal - This is not a real genre.

Christian metal is basicly just metal and with Christian lyrics, and is used by christian bandsOriginally Posted by Kataxu
Pirate metal is like christian metal, a "genre" which is metal and with piraty lyrics. Those two you might not want to call real genres as the part making them "pirate or chrstian" is the lyrics
Viking metal might be a sub-genre of folk metal, but yet still a genre of metal, some bands who use it is, fintrold, amon amarth and Svartsot
Extream metal, okay ye thats my mistake. I might not be able to use it as a genre as I did, as it's basicly just the "over catogory" for several other genres.
Rap metal is a close relatede to rap rock, but being heavy metal blended with hip hop. nu metal can be other things than just hip hop.
alternative metal is metal but with alternative style, also influrenced by alternative rock, one band who uses this is disturbed.
Stoner metal, where slugde is more agressive, stoner is slowed down. And Stoner is close friend to stoner rock
Neo-classical metal, and progressive metal, yeah they are pretty close. But both are still a sub genre of metal

Edited the title. No Metal is the best type of Metal, it's all opinion.
As for me, I only really listen to 'old-school' metal. I suppose it's the stuff that's just called 'metal' or 'heavy metal'. Stuff like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, the first big metal bands. I just don't find any enjoynment in any other sorts of metal.
Black metal
Death metal
Folk metal
Gothic metal
Industrial metal
Nu metal
Progressive metal
Alternative metal
Avant-garde metal
Grindcore
Viking metal
Any type of metal ... it's all so ... so ... wonderfull <3
Black Metal. Mostly stuff from Germany and Norway.
Folk Metal
Power Metal
and last but nor least
True Scottish Pirate Metal ;D
I prefer listening to band that I like and not care about what category they fall under. Namedropping is better at times like this to show the variety in the category metal.
Arch Enemy - Alestorm - As I Lay Dying - At The Gates - Cathedral - Dark Tranquillity - Dimmu Borgir - Disturbed - Korpiklaani - Lamb of God - Machine Head - Meshuggah - Pantera
Sabaton - Slayer - The Berzerker - The Haunted.
To mention a few. So the poll is meaningless as almost all bands I have listed here fall under a category of its own, with some exceptions where they fall under the same.
Gothic/Symphonic
