Last Exile if very good. Probably in my top 20 favorite overall. It's got this really cool steampunk thing going. The music is great as well. I especially like the opening

I'm hearing rumors that Deadman Wonderland didn't do so great in Japan... can anyone confirm? They say because there's an over-saturation of "cutesy" anime and gory, serious anime is in a decline.

Just saw a raw video of a special episode floating around somewhere

I haven't seen a complete sales figure. But going by the sales of the first volume it really was a disaster, selling less than 1k copies BD and DVD combined. An anime is considered a success if the first volume sells 10k and more, and the line for the studio to break even is around 3k.
By comparison I believe Madoka sold for around 70k
