The Batman 9/10 : I loved it, it's definitely a movie about Batman which is great and not something we've had before, which was a bit of a concern going into it.

    A Quiet Place 2

Lots of handovers from AQP1. 3/5, would never watch again but OK basic watch.

The Batman: 8/10 Battinson sold me. Pretty solid crime flick with strong Fincher vibes. I liked how grimey everything was, like you'd need a Purell bath from just stepping outside. Third act dragged, but it's a minor gripe. I'd be fine if DC/WB just did stuff like this, instead of shitting the bed with an extended shared universe. Could've done without the Joker nod, but it's fine.

    edit:

The Cursed: 8/10 Great looking and pretty satisfying werewolf yarn. I could've used more monsters and gore myself, but goddamn it's pretty.

The Batman - 6/10 Pretty Big fan of the dark knight here.. to the point of knowing lots of tidbits about the franchise. Including Mark Hamill as voicing the Joker for an example.

Will go into detail why it lost points for me:

Someone mentioned grimey, I felt it was more angst. Wasn't surprised Patterson pulled off mopey acting flawlessly.

Very dark lighting..I get it is intentional but it was a bit too much and it was consistent throughout the movie. Felt like no real breather and a lot of scenes could've been much stronger.. like the batmobile scene. Disappointed by that one.. late night but in the rain? Talk about hard to see quality. Why were they ashamed to show off the batmobile they created? Tbh it gave off neat vibes. So next time, if a next time let us see the damn thing.

The costumes or lack of I should say.. I didn't enjoy Riddlers mask much, no cat ears? (Doesn't mean get super tacky with the costumes but ski masks? Common.) Also the most awkward thing about Patterson playing the role was him in that mask. Which was not surprising, it is why I had a hard time envisioning him in this role. (My hunch was correct too)

The biggest pet peeve was a 3 hour Batman movie. Just, no. Too long.. I would love to see the time cutback a bit next time around if it happens.

Couple other reasons I would've docked some points off, but I feel like I mentioned the most important ones.

Patterson didn't do a bad job considering all the things I mentioned that are beyond his control. I dug his voice and acting for the role. So he did good job. Most of the actors/actresses did a stellar job..not entirely sure about the actor who played the Riddler probably still needs to process. I just seen this today.. the weird Saw vibes I felt from a Batman movie were probably not working in the way I perceived this actor tbh. Smeagol (Andy Serkis) as Alfred was fine.

Is it my favorite Batman movie? No.
Is it my most hated Batman movie? No.
Would I recommend this movie? Yes.
Now would I watch another one of these movies? Yes.

    The Northman 9/10

Eggers delivers the third film in a row that is a remarkable technical and artistic work.

Phenomenal editing and acting. Cinematography is, of course, terrific.

The film does seem more straightforward and restrained. It doesn't quite reach the level of transcendence of The Witch and The Lighthouse which asks the audience to rise to the level of the art in quite the same way.

The film needed to be more esoteric, abrasing, and perhaps colder in the final cut. The framing of brutality here can be pornographic at times because there isn't enough distance in the material to make the film feel genuine in its message.

Kind of a "you can not make an anti-war film" situation here. However, that said this is a very good film and made with a lot of skill.

    The Batman. 10/10.

Finally saw it on HBO Max before yesterday and it surpassed all of my expectations. Matt Reeves is a truly gifted director, and whatever optimism I had for the movie rode on his shoulder, and he didn't disappoint.

Its unique tone reminded me of The Long Halloween, a great story to draw inspiration from.

The best looking Gotham I think I've ever seen on film. The only other that comes close was Burton's Gotham. Reeves did more with Chicago to make it look like the Gotham of the comics Nolan ever did.

Pattinson surprised me. It helps to have a great director, but you also have to pull your weight and Pattinson carried his own slack. His look, his voice, and his emotional range nailed it. I didn't think he could ever have a role that would make me forget he was Edward Cullen, but he did, and it was like he was born to play Batman. This performance alone puts him on par with Christian Bale to me, and he might surpass it if he continues this work in the next two planned sequels.

What is there to say about the story? It was captivating. For a near 3 hour movie, there was never a dull moment. Every line of dialogue mattered. Every scene was engaging and kept me wanting to see what would happen next, like assembling the world's most interesting puzzle. I honestly regret not seeing this on the big screen.

Now... for the things I didn't care for.

Paul Dano's costume. Not his performance, the costume. His performance was great, for all 10 minutes or so we actually got to see his face, anyway. That's my problem. His costume, while practical and logical to the story opposed to the goofy green top hat and green domino mask, was detrimental to his performance. I've loved Paul Dano since There Will Be Blood, and when I heard he would play The Riddler? Dream casting. But his performance suffered the same way Tom Hardy's did in Rises due to a suffocating costume that stifled their performances.

Zoe Kravitz was forgettable as Catwoman. I appreciate her effort, but she just didn't have *it*. Anee Hathaway was as memorable in a much smaller role, to put in perspective. Also hated the mask. Catwoman's comic book costume is one of the few that can be adapted faithfully to the big screen and not look silly. Are goggles really that expensive to buy for a cat burglar that can crack a safe?

Loved all the Easter eggs, and I'm officially excited for the sequel(s.) It's my second favorite Batman movie, only behind The Dark Knight.

Oh, and the soundtrack? Best ever in a Batman movie.

    Batman 7/10

I did not like it as much as the Christian Bale Batman movies. The atmosphere of the movie was good. I liked the dark sets and city scenes. They reminded me of batman the animated series. The music was not bad. The riddler character was a pretty good villain.
I did not like Robert Pattinson as batman much. He did the fight scenes well. I don't think he had a good appearance as batman. I thought he acted to depressive as batman.

The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent 8/10

This was so fun and funny. A rarity as I think most pictures are terribly unfunny. But I was tot ly hard by this and the acting (as expected) A+. Pascal and Cage got it, they got cinematic chemistry and it comes easily for them.

    The Batman: 7.5/10.

I will edit this, as we have not quite yet finished the movie. For Batman himself, I feel like this is an extremely refreshing depiction, probably the best yet. You know he has money and tech, but he's as far from a 'superhero' as he's ever been portrayed in both behavior and occasional mistakes, which makes this a very enjoyable watch. The movie is a pretty slow burn which might turn off some people, though I haven't yet felt like it was dragging. The Riddler... simply comes across as too young though the acting is fantastic, and his overall motivation could be a bit better.

So far this has been a great flick. I'd say to compare it to The Dark Knight, it falls short only in its depiction of the antagonist. They've also missed (so far) a great opportunity to tie this into The Joker in terms of what Bruce's fathers "big secret" was, but that isn't a huge gripe really

Edit... finished it, probably a solid 8 or 8.5/10. One of the better superhero flicks to come along in quite a while.

    The Batman 8.5/10

Really enjoyed this and the 3 hours flew by. As many have said, seeing the detective side was a nice change.

Only one thing took me out of the movie, and that was the scene before the car chase. Apparently Gordon just… got the firefight to stop? That seemed odd. The amount of punishment Batman took was way over the top but I just consider that part of the genre. They sure seemed to push that way harder than the other live action ones, though.

    The Batman, 7/10

I wanted to like this movie as it does a lot of things well, but it just failed in some aspects that left me dissatisfied.

    Spoiler:
    What I liked:
    - Cinematography. The movie has good style to it. I especially liked the beginning part that stylishly showcases the fear Batman has planted into the hearts of Gotham's criminals, so much so that they become numb just for seeing a dark alleyway that might hide Batman within.

    - The main plot (mostly). As much as I've liked the Riddler's portrayals in, say, the Arkham series and Gotham, he's always been too campy to have credibility as anything more than a supporting villain. This version of him is believable, creepy, and somehow manages to naturally incorporate his trademark shtick of hiding clues behind riddles. Dano also nails it.

    - Farrell pulls off a fine, if unoriginal Penguin.

    - In general the movie holds together and is soundly watchable.

    What I didn't like:
    - In non-action scenes Batman moves slooooowly. Like, so slowly it becomes comical. When there is action he flails around like you'd expect, but the contrast is disorienting when you became accustomed to him posturing around like a doofus.

    - Romance between Catwoman and Batman felt forced. I would've accepted that they'd become an item towards the end of the movie, but the kiss happens too soon, in a moment when they're still little more than recently acquainted co-workers of a sort.

    - Much like the romance mentioned above the movie has other events that makes me struggle with suspending my disbelief. Here's the most gripping: Batman and Catwoman discover the dead body of the latter's friend in the Penguin's trunk, Penguin notices them, flees and a chase ensues. During this chase the Penguin (and Batman by proxy) causes huge damage to Gotham's infrastructure and multiple casualties (either wounded or dead civilians; their fate is not shown). After Batman and Gordon finally catch up with him they discover he's actually not who they were after (the human McGuffin of the movie known as the 'Rat' or La Rata whatever) and promptly abandon him and the scene to look for other clues. For everything that just happened and what the Penguin has apparently done, he gets to go on like nothing happened. Likewise, for all the moments some regular beat cops criticize Batman, he doesn't get flack for this pointless, destructive chase sequence. Also, his car sucks.

    - I was going to give this movie credit for skipping Batman's origin story, only for it to dial back to it by tying Falcone to the murder of the Waynes. I also generally disliked this particular subplot.

    - I like Pattison as an actor, but don't think he's right for Batman. This somewhat plays into the next point.

    - A major gripe: Batman fumbles around a lot and relies on his indestructible armor too much. This isn't a greenhorn Bat, he's supposedly already two years into crimefighting by this point. I get that Reeves wanted a more realistic take on Batman; I myself am on record for saying The Dark Knight was delightfully realistified in every aspect but the leading man himself. The Batman shows why he shouldn't be. Batman, the way I've always known him, is supposed to be this near perfect embodiment of values, justice and capability; a member of the Justice League, top tier in DC's roster of heroes. The Batman in this movie felt closer to the ragtag vigilantes of The Dark Knight's prologue. It's fine for him to face adversity and even struggle to a point before prevailing, but Reeves's Batman felt like he's just some dude with martial arts training and a perfect body armor. I mostly blame Reeves for this portrayal, but it's enhanced by Pattison being a bad fit for Batman imo. Actually, thinking about it, he's a quite good fit for this... mundane take on Batman. Perhaps that's why they wanted him for the role.
Now you see it. Now you don't.

    But was where Dalaran?

    A slight edit because...funny!
I chuckled, but I know I would have loudly guffawed had "Fu Manchu" been squeezed in.

Since I have had a crush on Michelle Yeoh since the 80s, it was no surprise that I liked the movie. The real surprise was that my wife, who had strong aversion for action movies, liked it also.

If you can find the Chinese version with subtitle, Reign of Assassins is worth watching. Avoid the Weinstein US release version. They totally butchered that one by taking out a big chunk of the movie.

Incredible movie lots, of fun, great acting and very creative visuals and awesome storytelling. Enjoyed this more than any marvel movie released in 3 years.

    The Northman
    TBA

Unfortunately no where in my area is showing it. They really should just call my local cinema the MCU theatre. ITs all they keep showing there, while other movies get very few times shown and very few dates

Looks like I'll have to wait for a digital release. Only time I got to watch Everything Everywhere All At Once was at 7pm. the only time showing all week. 1 day a fucking week.
I love Warcraft, I dislike WoW

    100000/10

I just can't believe this movie is almost 50yo. Just like myself) Anyway compared to the disposable garbage entertainment we are served today, it's a masterpiece. Oh and a leading lady isn't a Mary Sue or an obnoxious cunt, yay!

  18. #15518
The Northman was exactly what a viking epic should be with excellent score, sound, acting, and cinematography, as well as some neat bits that most people wouldn't realize are actually myth accurate (Valkyrie having engravings on her teeth, other stuff).

But it also doesn't really...have anything in it that would make me say you HAVE to watch this. If you're familiar with Nordic myths the twists were obvious from the beginning and the moral greyness was not only expected, but required.

It's a movie that strongly meets the bar but does nothing further than being beautiful.

I'd give it a 6/10. Wouldn't watch again but wouldn't say it's bad. Not something to watch if you're not doing it with an amazing sound system and huge screen.

Justice league (the Woss Jedoln cut): 2/10- what an utterly wretched movie, holy shit. at this point I think it's safe to say the Wedoln school of bants and one liners is not only grating but genuinely cringe inducing.

Justice league ( the Zack Snyder cut) 7/10- wow, I mean despite how long this whole thing is it didn't feel like a total slog to get through. so much better than the Weldon Cut in pretty much every way except everything that happens after what should have been the end of the movie. my god that "post credit" stuff is bad, and completely unnecessary.
