now in my price range I can get a:
Intel Core i5-2410M 2.3GHz
or
AMD QC A6 3410MX 1.6GHz
would the quad core perform better than the other even with lower GHz?

The i5 is better.
Edit: the amd one is an apu, are you using integrated graphics on your laptop?

Kind of vague details but are you trying to buy just a laptop cpu or a complete laptop? If just buying the cpu to upgrade what you have it'd be best advised to see what your current laptop supports. If buying a whole laptop then personally I'd suggest the i5-2410 as I'm biased towards Intel.
ye im trying to buy a full laptop just not sure whats best

I would actually recommend going with this one if you can:

Same laptop just different config... has a quad core cpu (same power as the i5 just double the cores).

The Acer is much better.
According to this site http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Rad...2.57266.0.html, the 540M is much better than the 6545G2, and the i5 will undoubtedly be much better than the apu.

even with 4GB less ram ?
Most games don't use more than 2gb of ram.
4gb will be plenty for a few years.
People building pc's get 8gb because ram is dirt cheap and for future-proofing beyond a couple years.
You can also upgrade ram in laptops... if you decide in a year or 2 that you really want 8gb.
